Missouri tornado: How to Help

Death toll from Joplin tornado rises to 142 Reuters – Angela Greenwood looks for belongings from her destroyed apartment building in Joplin, Missouri May 27, …

A massive tornado struck the small Missouri town of Joplin on May 22, killing more than 100 people. Hundreds more were injured and rescue teams are still searching the rubble for survivors.

The massive twister destroyed an estimated 30 percent of the city; entire neighborhoods were reduced to vast piles of rubble. "It's like taking a mower through tall grass. That's what it looks like. The devastation is complete. It is down to the ground," said State Senator Ron Richard.

Below are organizations that are working on relief and recovery in the region.

@ Louist: I hope your city never experiences that destruction that we have here in Joplin. When you see friends and family and even people you don't know wondering around homeless, maybe you'll start to understand why you can't just leave it those charities. I pray you never understand exactly how insensitive and inappropriate your comments are.

    1. Joplin is not a "small town". It is (was) a city of 50,000.
    2. Governor Nixon should call upon the good people of KC and other Missourians to open their homes to survivors. That's the kind of practical help people need.

And yet again there is no mention of the Salvation Army. 96% of the money donated to the SA goes to the people needing it. Catholic Charities also get the help to the people in need and dont line their pockets. I am sure there are other Cristian based charities out there doing a tremendous job. I guess the media does not like religion based charities.

Other tornado disasters had places in my area (Florida) for people to drop off clothes ect. I wish I could do more, but I just got my own little place a few months from being homeless for 4 months with my children. Anyhow if someknows where I can take some sheets, adult/children clothes, and whatever else we can find please reply to me. I've researched but only find money donations and I that I don't have. I attend school full-time and work, but the economy here is terrible, nonetheless; Florida doesn't pay well. Please tell me where to take items to these people and God Bless all of you.

It was such a terrible thing what happened to the parts of the country hit by the tornados. The whole thing makes me so mad ! The government is spending millions if not billions of dollars to help all the people affected by this disaster and something they can't help with is to replace is the people who died in this didaster ! I've heard it is possible to build structures that can can stand up to tornadoes but those kind of structures are very expensive. There are very few basements in that part of the country which I thought was just amazing ! There are probably a good many of those people who either died or was some how affected by this disaster who is poor and cannot afford a better place to live . It seems to me it would make sense for the goverment to spend the money to build structures that can stand up to tornadoes even if they are expensive to build. This might help prevent such distruction and loss of life! They say these structures are too expensive to build but they have to spend a lot of money anyway to clean up the mess over and over again every time a storm like that occurs which probably adds up to a lot more money than if durable structures were built in the first place. It seems to me that somebody in the government would consider this! I don't think it makes any sense to keep rebuilding and have another tornado come along and start all over again. Why don't people in charge have more brains !
