Moore County Sheriff Lane Carter said Friday that a 16-year-old is charged with using a construction excavator to heavily damage a store and a church in the Lobelia area near Vass.

That's just northwest of Fayetteville.

Carter said his officers first got the report of someone damaging buildings with a Bobcat tractor just after midnight Friday.

Deputies found severe damage to the Mount Pleasant Christian Church on Lobelia Road and a nearby Dollar General Store. Carter said property belonging to Progress Energy was also damaged.

Officers say they were alerted to a suspicious individual in the area by a citizen and captured 16-year-old Jordan Lee Briggs of 130 Southwind Drive, Vass, after a brief foot chase.

Carter said Briggs had property with him that connected him to the building damage.

Briggs is charged with two counts of felony injury to buildings, one count of misdemeanor injury to real property, one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer, and consuming alcohol by persons less than 19 years of age.

Briggs was confined to the Moore County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond pending a court date on May 26 in Moore County District Court.
