EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
MARTLET PUBLISHING SOCIETY
FUNCTION:
In cooperation with the Martlet staff and in accordance with policies of the society, the editor-in-chief will be responsible for the overall direction, continuity and quality of the paper.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
- Report to board of directors on editorial decisions.
- Directly supervise the work of the editorial and volunteer staff of the Martlet.
- Work with any outside agencies to carry out duties of the editor-in-chief.
DUTIES:
- Take responsibility for the editorial decisions of the paper.
- With managing editor and production co-ordinator, ensure all necessary requirements for weekly
publication of the paper have been met.
- Understand and work within the guidelines of the Martlet Publishing Society.
- Understand libel, fact-checking and media law.
- Edit all stories, ensuring that print copy is edited by at least two different people (not including copy
edits).
- Assist writers with stories as necessary.
- Write section stories and editorials as necessary.
- Take responsibility along with the managing editor and the production co-ordinator to ensure that the office is staffed during the fall and spring semesters when classes are in session from the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
- Act as an information resource person for staff members, society groups and the general public.
- Conduct or arrange workshops to help with skills.
- In conjunction with managing editor and production co-ordinator, assist in the hiring of part-time employees.
- In conjunction with the production co-ordinator, take responsibility for the Martlet multimedia programs, and work with staff and volunteers to ensure its success.
- Take responsibility with the managing editor and production co-ordinator to ensure that new staff and volunteers are recruited and trained.
- Ensure that section editors and other editorial employees carry out their responsibilities as described in their job descriptions.
- Establish deadlines and assist section editors in enforcing them.
- Organize and attend weekly paper critiques and weekly editorial meetings.
- Operate the Martlet mailing listserve and newsletter to ensure staff and volunteers are informed about meetings and other paper-related events.
- Develop, implement and maintain a social networking presence for the Martlet.
- Ensure the Martlet website is frequently updated with relevant, timely content that compliments and supplements the print edition.
- Take responsibility for comment moderation on the Martlet website.
- Promote a healthy working relationship with the managing editor, production co-ordinator, other employees and volunteer staff.
- In conjunction with the production co-ordinator and the managing editor, ensure the office is a tidy, respectful environment.
- Participate in committees as decided by staff and the bylaws of the society.
- Sit on the editor-in-chief hiring committee for the following year unless he or she is re-applying for the position.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of newspaper writing, editing and layout; previous experience with editing.
- Ability to work long hours in a high-pressure student environment with staff and volunteers who hold
diverse perspectives.
- Knowledge of defamation, copyright laws, Canadian Press style.
- Knowledge of Adobe InDesign.
- Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop favourable.
- Familiarity with online content and/or publishing favourable.
- Commitment to the goals of the Martlet.
REMUNERATION:
- This position is part-time during the summer semester and full-time during the fall and spring semesters.

PRODUCTION CO-ORDINATOR
MARTLET PUBLISHING SOCIETY
FUNCTION:
In cooperation with the Martlet staff and in accordance with policies of the society, the production co-ordinator will be responsible for the overall design and production quality of the paper.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
- Report to board of directors on design decisions.
- Directly supervise the work of the production staff of the Martlet.
- Communicate with the editor-in-chief and managing editor on the design of the paper.
DUTIES:
- Take responsibility for the visual elements of the paper.
- Understand and work within the guidelines of the Martlet Publishing Society.
- Prepare and upload final press-ready PDF files to the printer.
- Work with advertising director to design ads.
- Ensure computer hardware and software is in proper working order.
- Take responsibility for uploading content to the Martlet website (in absence of web editor/web content manager).
- Take responsibility along with the managing editor and the editor-in-chief to ensure that the office is staffed during the fall and spring semesters when classes are in session from the hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
- Act as an information resource person for staff members regarding principles of design and layout of a newspaper.
- In conjunction with managing editor and editor-in-chief, assist in the hiring of part-time employees.
- Take responsibility with the managing editor and editor-in-chief to ensure that new staff and volunteers are recruited and trained.
- Ensure that production staff carry out their responsibilities as described in their job descriptions.
- Assist staff and volunteers with aspects of design and layout as required.
- Conduct or arrange workshops to help with skills development.
- Attend weekly critiques of the paper and weekly editorial meetings.
- Consult with the editor-in-chief and managing editor when changes in design or format are necessary.
- Promote a healthy working relationship with the managing editor, editor-in-chief, other employees and volunteer staff.

- Ability to work long hours in a high-pressure student environment with staff and volunteers who hold diverse perspectives.
- Basic knowledge of defamation and copyright laws.
