Gemma was first bitten by the journalism bug when she stepped into the Edmonton Journal’s newsroom during a high school field trip in 2004. Her desire to write combined with her nerdy passion for politics brought Gemma to UVic, where she majored in political science and minored in journalism. Gemma worked at the Martlet throughout her degree (to the detriment of her grades), holding several different positions including sports editor, living editor and news editor. Upon completing her degree, Gemma decided to stick around for one final year to run the show as editor-in-chief, an experience she’s found to be challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Gemma’s next adventure will be in the Great White North where she’s working as an intern for the Whitehorse Star this summer. She’ll return to academia next fall, taking the Master of Journalism program at Carleton University.
