Brian Cheng resigns from head coach post

After 15 years with the UVic Vikes women’s basketball program, Brian Cheng has resigned his postion as the squad’s head coach. Coming off a season that, at times, saw the Vikes ranked first in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) standings, Cheng has cited personal reasons for his departure.

Law Rugby Team triumphant in re-emergence

The UVic Law Rugby Team resurrected the Slaughter Cup on Saturday, March 12 against the UBC Illegal Beavers. The Slaughter Cup has been in the possession of UBC since the last game in 1997. While the Illegal Beavers came over confidently predicting they’d bring the Cup home with them again, they didn’t — UVic won the game 17-5.

TC 10K aims promote healthy lifestyles

Vikes eliminated

Vikes guard Debbie Yeboah led all scorers with 24 points enroute to the 83-73 loss to the University of Regina Cougars on March 11. The loss ousted the Vikes from the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Western Regional Tournament and ended UVic’s post-season.

Now, he’s a professional kickboxer who’s fought all over the world, from China to New York, and his young career has come full circle; he’s currently readying to step into the ring against France’s Yohan Havan on March 12 in Ladysmith in his first shot at the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) lightweight championship belt.

Vikes end year on bittersweet note

After yet another year spent hovering just below the upper echelon of Canada West teams, the UVic men’s basketball program gave up 50 points in the second half of their game against the University of Alberta on Feb. 26, as the Golden Bears ran away with the game and the Canada West quarter-final series.

Living my rock and roll fantasy with UVic club

The best thing I can say about my first curling performance is that I didn’t bail. I joined the UVic curling club for their weekly Sunday night session at the Victoria Curling Club, intending to talk about the upcoming Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) Regional Qualifying tournament being held in Edmonton from Feb. 18 to 20. And I did that. But I also ended up throwing my first rocks.

UVic tramples competition at horse show

Total victory was the story for the UVic Equestrian Club at their first-ever Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) show at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Feb. 5. UVic riders won every class in both the morning and the afternoon shows, placing the university first overall in the region.

Espeseth leaves winning legacy in her wake

Being a leader means many things. You make sacrifices, both physically and emotionally. You inspire and elevate those around you. And you set an example for those following you. Three-year Vikes field hockey captain Perri Espeseth did all this and more in her five-year varsity career.
