9-13 May: Fantu Cheru participates in conference in Istanbul
Istanbul is the venue for the fourth United Nations conference on the Least Developed Countries taking place between in Instanbul. Fantu Cheru, NAI research director, will attend the conference as a member of the Academic Council, consisting of prominent scholars and experts. He will, together with Ali Mazrui, speak on African development.

13 May: Inception workshop
Mats Utas and  Anders Themnér are arranging an inception workshop for a new Sida financed project with the title 'The Informal Realities of Peacebuilding - Military Networks and Former Mid-Level Commanders in Post-War Liberia' . A dozen researchers and practitioners from Liberia have been invited as well as participants from Sweden, Denmark, Norway and England. Read about the new research project here.

19 May: "Beatings, bannings and bones: an update on the human rights context in Zimbabwe"
The Church of Sweden invites you to a lecture on the human rights situation in Zimbabwe. The Solidarity Peace Trust is a non-governmental organisation, registered in South Africa. On 19 May the Church Office in Uppsala is visited by three representatives from SPT: Shari Eppel, Selvan Chetty and Prof. Brian Raftopoulos.
The lecture with Shari Eppel and Prof. Brian Raftopoulos will take place from 3.30 to 5 pm on 19 May in Missionskyrkan (S:t Olofsgatan 40, Uppsala). The presentation will focus on the ambiguities of the Global Political Agreement, examining both the constraints and opportunities it has offered and setting it in the context of broader current developments on the African continent. Furthermore, Ms. Eppel will discuss the recent highly partisan controversies over the exhumations of the remains of victims of war and political violence in Zimbabwe. The lecture is conducted in consultation with the Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation and NAI.

31 May: Writers' Africa with Chris Mlalazi
Christopher Mlalazi, Zimbabwian writer in conversation with Maria Larsson, Journalist, from The Africa Group in Uppsala. 18.00-19.30, in the NAI Library.

13-14 June: International Workshop in Uppsala
'Workshop on South-South Cooperation and new forms of Southern Multilateralism'.
Information on the workshop will will shortly be announced .

14 June: ELIAS - European Librarians in African Studies. Annual Meeting 2011, Uppsala, Sweden.

15-18 June: ECAS 2011 - 4th European Conference on African Studies
The theme of the conference is 'African Engagements: On Whose Terms?'. It will be convened in Uppsala and is co-organised by the Nordic Africa Institute and the African Studies in Europe (AEGIS). Read more about the conference here.

22-25 September: Gothenburg Book Fair
The Nordic Africa Institute will participate in the fair and have it's stand at 'Forskartorget' (researchers square).

The seminar series "Challenging concepts"

The series is organised by the Rural research cluster at the Nordic Africa Institute, and the Swedish Interdisciplinary research network on livelihoods and natural resource governance (SERN).

The objectives of the seminar series are to challenge concepts that are widely used in research and policy related to rural, agrarian and broader development issues.
