In Hong Kong, words such as conservation and heritage have only just started to seep into people's consciousness. In fact, in recent decades, the city has changed beyond recognition, and many traces of its past have disappeared forever.
Today, Hong Kong is a curious mix of ultramodern glass-and-chrome skyscrapers, run-down buildings from the 1950s and '60s and a small residue of elegant colonial structures.
