Real Life Iron Man Suits
Seeing Mark 1-3 armor in the first Iron Man film was cool. We got to see the suit from its inceptions as Tony Stark escaped his captors by inventing his alter ego. Seeing the “Transformers“-like Mark 5 in in Iron Man 2 allowed for an even higher geek factor. Who knows what Iron Man 3 or The Avengers movies will bring us in terms of updated Mark models (We’d love to see the modular armor), but we can rest assured that Jon Favreau and Joss Whedon are going to show us something new.
For those of us caught in the tenuous space between fantasy and reality, the Iron Man suit represents something amazing. Tony Stark is a superhero that could actually exist someday. Yes, Iron Man armor is many years away but many of the premises behind it are possible, and it hasn’t prevented the premier scientists in the field of robotics from making huge leaps in the field. The first efforts may be rudimentary but they represent endless possibility (cue mecha fantasy of the last scene in Matrix Revolutions). Here’s a look at what robonerds have managed to create so far.
