One demonstrator died in the violence, state-run news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported, escalating political tensions and forcing a top Kurdish politician to cancel a meeting with Turkey's president.

According to officials at the Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP, thousands of demonstrators fought with police in Diyarbakir, the largest city in Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast.
