Henry "Insert Nickname Here" Cen is a name you should know, as one of the golden boys who took home a top 8 finish in Evo 2010's SSF4 competition. What you might not know is that he has been the operator of the famous, but now closed, China Town Fair arcade, and is opening a new gaming business called Next Level. Hoping to get my comment read, I love the show, it's somethign wonderful to listen to when I'm up way too late and wanna turn something else on to listen to while I play LoL.

Anyways, as for the NLG thing, it sounds like he's just made a normal LANN center but is trying to justify it being something much bigger. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to take away from him as he obviously has the community in mind and I respect that greatly. But if we just look at where I come from we have Monsters Arcade. Now, for the most part, it's you're run of the mill LAN centers but with more TV/Consoles then PCs, how ever this is becoming more and more common.

What sets them apart from NORMAL LAN centers isn't that they want to not have "scrubs" come in or what ever. It's that they set things up for FGC players to come in and interact. And they eventually became apart of the scene themselves (Shout outs to Brian and Dre). When someone was acting a fool they obviously were called out on it, not by the owners but by the people playing: Usually it's their equipment being mistreated and they said something about it.

I think he's on the right path, though. Giving players a spot to come and play is important, and giving them the means is wonderful. I think a time based thing though is kind of outdated, back in about 2004 when I was a heavy PC gamer i used to go to the LAN center near my house all the time, before LAN centers focused on console gamers. They had a login system for everything, but that doesn't really work for the kind of enviroment that the FGC breeds. You can't have 2 people logged on to 1 tv for an amount of play, especially not when you're constantly switching off. It works for the arcade machines cause you pop in a quarter and you're good to go.

Rather, once again accidentally plugging Monster's Arcade, they do 2 things. A) Pay 10$ for all day and B) 20$ for a "membership" and you can go to all of their events free, namely casuals weekly and a good amount of other things. I use them as the example because it is the best I have seen for something like us. Not only can they cater to the FGC, but also to players of other genres.

Also, because it is a dream of mine, I would love for a place like this to have a Pizza shop in it. Back in the day every weekend we would go to a local pizza shop to buy a pizza and waste the rest of our allowance on MVC2 and SF3. Any place that decides to tend to the FGC should have pizza.....

Regarding GGPO - Though reaction windows are basically the unsolvable issue with lag, another issue with rollback based latency compensation is that it will clip the startup of moves - possibly stuff that people cue on to reaction.

Since you asked about Phoenix, it seems that balancing any character like that which can easily die in a single hit is going to be walking a razor's edge. The likely scenarios for the development of Phoenix in high level competitive play are as a niche character (Strider in MvC2) or banned. As Keits mentioned, people don't seem to be winning with her, so it's probably niche.

Keits: You've mentioned deeper payouts or payouts to more players several times now. It's also come up in the context of Season's Beatings last year. Can you comment on reconciling deep payouts (even to third place) with the double elimination format which, even with double jeopardy resolution, is, really, only reliable up to second place?

henry's ideas for Next Level sound pretty idealistic and I think he's going to run into some logistical problems actually creating a place that is technically open to anyone, yet is scrub-free, and still makes money.

I had a feeling Keits was thinking on the same lines based on the some of the questions he asked

however, I definitely hope it works out

Ehh, by "scrub", I'm pretty sure he means ppl who just wanna mash buttons mindlessly and complain about shit when they lose, etc. Also randoms who just come in and take up space/don't play.

Anyone good or bad that wants to step it up is welcome.

The word "professional" means more than collecting money. The difference between amateur and pro is that even though both can get money by winning, only the pro wins money just by playing.

If simply winning money at SOME point makes someone pro, then we can all hold tournies in our basements with our moms and be pro. If just being ABLE to win money makes us pro, then technically the people that go 2 and out at tournaments are pros.

The only true pros in my eyes are the ones that make money by playing, win or lose-- the people that have corporate entities that truly believe that audiences will tune in just to watch them PLAY. Pro athletes are paid to play, not paid to win (though there are bonuses involved, of course).

      Great show guys.

Henry Cen's idea sounds like a great way to increase the scene, his point about people just coming in mashing buttons without trying to understand the game annoys me even online, so attempting to eliminate that sounds great. Not to mention him being willing to tutor people who want to learn is awesome, because you can really only learn so much from videos, before getting input on what you can do to perform better becomes more important than learning new combos. Or even having someone helping you to understand situations can really elevate your performance. So best of luck to Henry Cen, and I'm gonna do my best to get there when it opens.

just a random question. are any one at EMP sponsored then? if theyre not, then theyre not consider pro?

I feel Henry has a very good idea for what he wants to do, but I also feel that by removing beginners from the equation you're creating a very small group that's not going to give him the steady income he's gonna need to survive. So long as the hourly rate is acceptable the 'game center', if I can call it that, should be success-full as it will reduce the amount of loiters and alleviate the need for steady revenue as more return gamers will join up. But again it shouldn't be forgotten that at one point everyone was a no nothing scrub before he played quality players in an arcade, so I'd say be careful with that proposition. I'll leave off by saying that anytime a gaming center opens we should support it and I genuinely hope this place succeeds, Brooklyn deserves it.

I'm curious about the membership fee. I know he needs to keep the place afloat but if I pay an hourly fee to stand there and only get one turn on the machine, what value do I get from it? It's great I can see people play but I can both watch pros play and get feedback from them online. I may not be able to play them but if I'm paying to just stand there and get a turn every hour I don't see the value, either. In CF MvC2 used to have 30-45 minute waits on Friday nights so it's not out of the question. Either way I guess I'll go as soon as he has the official grand opening.

Great show again. I'm looking forward to more Danger Room content. In regards to the importance of offline play I couldn't agree more. I recently have been having a difficult time figuring out why I lose certain matches in MvC3. Until now I didn't realize just how much I learned from watching my replays or spectator mode like in SSF4. I feel like this just reinforces the importance of offline play. My area is starting Ranbats soon which I feel will help a lot in lose analysis, through general conversation and spectating with other players.

Also, thanks for reading my comment. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it. Good point about my tag, considering I've used Akuma in every game he was available in.

Great show guys! Love listening to it every week, enough ass kissing though. Ski, I have absolutely no problem with Phoenix, she's a character that takes a lot of training room time to get the hang of. If you're playing against a decent player and you run into the match just expecting to win because she's "broken" you're going to be disappointed. You need to know what you're doing with her and how to get around the screen without getting hit, because if you do get hit, you're dead. She definitely cripples your team, as you have to be extremely careful with your meter or you're not going to have the 5 bars for D.P, not to mention that all it takes is a snap in and a good trap and she's dead. People should just spend half the time they spend complaining about characters and take that time into the lab to figure out how to beat those characters. Or you can just keep complaining to Capcom and get them to cripple every character in the game. Not like I'm salty about Sentinel or anything.
