UK Glass Events & Exhibitions

[Updated 12 August 2010]
National Glass Centre (Sunderland)

Re-make/Re-model

14 October 2010 – 27 February 2011

Talk: 5pm & Preview: 6-8pm, Wednesday 13 October

We are more aware today, than at any other time, of our impact on the environment. With Christmas approaching - the most poignant reminder of our disposable culture, fuelled by consumerism - this exhibition takes a look at artists’ work and projects that reuse and transform materials, that reconfigure or alter pre-existing objects. In some cases this touches upon the actual recycling of materials, in others it is the making of new work that is more than the sum of its parts.

Re-make/Re-model includes; milk bottles, drinks cans and bottles, smashed car windscreens, TVs and food cans, all of which have been recycled and given a new life and a new use. As the title implies this exhibition is also a call to action: to re-make or re-model. Artists include: Darren Banks, Ruth Claxton, Nick Crowe & Ian Rawlinson, Jacob Dahlgren, Steven Emmanuel, Leo Fitzmaurice, Lothar Goetz, Christian Gräser, Lucy Harvey, Charlotte Hughes-Martin, Amikam Toren.

Pairings: A Conversation (Sedbergh)

5 February to 3 April 2011

Mixed media touring exhibition featuring work by glass artists Kirsteen Aubrey, Vanessa Cutler, Jessamy Kelly, Inge Panneels, Sylvie Vandenhoucke & Cate Watkinson.

Over the last 18 months, 32 disparate makers from various backgrounds in craft, art and design, have formed 18 cross-disciplinary partnerships (or ‘pairings’) and in the process have had to engage with new technologies and techniques that are unfamiliar and sometimes unlikely. These marriages of materials, practices and creative identities has given birth to work and ideas that have redefined the nature of the object and of craft.

This exhibition aims to display and interpret the processes and document the ‘conversations’, as sketches, tests and experiments, as well as finished outcomes; to show intriguing new objects that challenge our notions of creative identity and ownership; and to be a starting point and site for the second phase of activity, where the exhibition itself becomes a discussion between all the makers, and between the makers and the audience.

North Lands Creative Glass Annual Master Class Programme 2011:
'Touching The Past' (Caithness)
24 August – 1 September: ‘The Drive To Improvise’

Philip Eglin and Tessa Clegg, both Jerwood Applied Arts prizewinners, will be orchestrating, in cooperation with Carl Nordbruch, an experimental hot glass blowing course. The Master Class will concentrate on idea development using as many hot glass techniques - particularly mould-blowing – as possible.

24 August – 1 September: ‘The Pleasures And Difficulties Of Choice’

The Master Class, led by Ivana Šrámková, will focus on creating sculptures, made in cast glass in combination with natural and man-made found objects.

6 – 14 September: ‘Out Of Thin Air’

The main direction of Michael Rogers’ masterclass will be the development of ideas with an emphasis on the individual’s inclinations and intuitive choices. Technically the focus will be on a combination of cast and blown glass compositions, assembled hot.

6 – 14 September: ‘Painting On Glass: Developing A Personal Iconography'

In this class, lead by Cappy Thompson, students will paint flat glass and small vessel forms, applying vitreous enamels to glass using the traditional painting technique of “grisaille” or gray-tonal painting as a foundation for developing and expressing the student’s own visual vocabulary.
