It serves investors; corporations, governments, and municipalities; commercial and investment banks; insurance companies; asset managers; and other debt issuers. The McGraw-Hill Financial segment offers digital and traditional research and analytical tools under the Capital IQ brand, and credit ratings-related information products under the S&P; Indices brand names; investment research products; and other data subscriptions for investment advisors, wealth managers, and institutional investors. The MHE segment sells printed and digital textbooks, digital and hybrid supplemental materials, integrated digital eLearning platforms, and other resources, as well as provides online and traditional assessment and reporting services. It serves elementary and high schools; colleges and universities; and professional, international, and adult education markets. The I&M; segment offers information, insight, and analysis for professionals and corporate executives in automotive, aerospace and defense, construction, and energy sectors, as well as for business and financial professionals, traders, investors, marketers, advertisers, and consumers. This segment also operates nine television stations. The company serves its customers through digital data and information, digital platforms, printed books, magazines and newsletters, Internet Web sites and broadcasting, and conferences and trade shows. The McGraw-Hill Companies was founded in 1888 and is headquartered in New York, New York.

The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. reported consolidated earnings results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2011. The company reported revenue of $1,281.9 million, income from operations of $214.4 million, income before taxes on income of $195.3 million, net income attributable to the company of $120 million or $0.39 per diluted share against revenue of $1,190.4 million, income from operations of $190.3 million, income before taxes on income of $168.2 million, net income attributable to the company of $103.3 million or $0.33 per diluted share for the previous year same period. Cash provided by operating activities was $49.3 million, capital expenditure $18.4 million against $106.4 million and $11.7 million respectively for the previous year same period. The company continues to maintain the guidance of diluted earnings per share of $2.79 to $2.89 for the year. The company expects another year of strong cash flow. Before dividends, it expects to generate cash flow greater than $1 billion. After dividends, free cash flow is projected to be in excess of $700 million. The company expects to generate the strong free cash flow despite increased capital investments. For 2011, it continues to expect prepublication investment of roughly $200 million to $225 million or approximately a $50 million to $75 million increase versus 2010, which was an unusually low year. Capital expenditures are projected to be up to $150 million, driven in part by increased digital and technology investments. This compares to $115 million in 2010.
