@meanmark1 Yes indeed. But I guess early Humans needed something INFERIOR to keep as their Pets (dogs, cats or horses). Having Primates for pets would be very challenging for humans, since they require almost human-like treatment. We share at least 95 % of our DNA with monkeys.
@Neueregel maybe not smarter in terms of self-awareness or ability process sign language, but it is undoubted that dog to human social intelligence (if there is such a term) is quite remarkable. it's been fine tuned for thousands of years I guess. I'm sure over time and with selective breeding much like with the domesticated foxes in Russia and like dogs over the past 10,000 years, monkeys and primates alike could increase their sociability to humans.
In animals you get a wide variety of intelligences... just like people.
And environment is important too... just like people, if the animal lives in an environment with mental stimulation, they are going to be "smarter" than normal.
@Chnamanjx "Some of them have college degrees haha."

I dare to say that some animals are smarter than modern humans. Just take a look at the cast of Jersey Shore.

Dogs ARE NOT smarter than monkeys. They cannot even pass the mirror test
