Susana Martinez was sworn in a governor of New Mexico on January 1, 2011, and is the state’s first female governor

Prior to becoming governor, Martinez was the district attorney for the third judicial district in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, for 13 years. Martinez was first elected district attorney in 1996, and was reelected three times.

In 2008, Heart Magazine named her “Woman of the Year” for her dedication to children’s advocacy and her efforts to keep children safe.

Martinez’s family includes her husband, Chuck, and stepson, Carlo.
