Gary Richard Herbert was born May 7, 1947, in American Fork, Utah, and grew up in Orem, Utah. He attended Brigham Young University. Herbert became Utah’s 17th Governor on August 11, 2009, after Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., was confirmed U.S. Ambassador to China. In his inaugural address, Governor Herbert outlined his three main priorities of economic development, public and higher education, and energy development.
Herbert was first elected Utah's sixth Lieutenant Governor on November 2, 2004. As Lieutenant Governor, Herbert led state efforts concerning homeland security, transportation, water and rural affairs issues. Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Herbert served 14 years on the Utah County Commission, earning many awards for his civic and community service. Herbert has also served as the President of the Utah Association of Counties, where he was named as Utah's Outstanding County Commissioner and County Elected Official. He is also the recipient of the National Outstanding Republican County Elected Official of the Year award.
A realtor by profession, Herbert is a former President of the Utah Association of Realtors. Herbert is also a veteran of the Utah Army National Guard. Herbert and his wife, Jeanette, operated a child care service for 23 years. They are the proud parents of six and grandparents of twelve. |
