Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon was born February 13, 1956, in De Soto, Missouri. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Missouri. After practicing law for several years, he was elected to the Missouri State Senate in 1986. He was first elected the state's attorney general in 1992 and served four terms. In 2000, as a result of a settlement with one of Missouri's largest insurance companies, he helped found the Missouri Foundation for Health, which provides health care services to needy Missourians throughout the state. In his first two years as Governor, he has implemented efficiency measures that have saved taxpayers millions of dollars, and has worked with the legislature to pass several jobs and economic development bills, a bill mandating insurance coverage for autism, and tougher DWI laws, among other measures. Nixon and his wife Georganne have two sons. |
