Neil Abercrombie was sworn in as governor of Hawaii on December 6, 2010.

He served in the Hawaii House of Representatives from 1975 to 1979 and in the state senate from 1979 to 1986. In 1990, Abercrombie was elected to represent Hawaii’s first congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served as chairman of the Armed Forces Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces and as a senior member of the Natural Resources Committee.

In 2009, Abercrombie received the Harry S. Truman Award—the highest honor given by the National Guard Association of the U.S. —for “sustained contributions of exceptional and far-reaching magnitude to the defense and security of the U.S.”

Abercromie received a master’s degree in sociology and a Ph.D. in American studies from the University of Hawaii Manoa.
