Choosing a pet

It’s a big decision, choosing an animal to share your life. Read about some good pet choices for Brisbane residents.

In Brisbane all dogs and cats need to be registered. A permit is required to keep more than two dogs or three cats.

Brisbane City Council has full details about local animal laws including poultry and horses. If you want a 'productive' pet, consider chickens.

And what about unsuitable pet options? Check which pets are banned in Queensland, including rabbits (no matter how fluffy they look) and certain reptiles.

Pet Adoption

There are many abandoned cats, dogs and other animals waiting for a chance at a loving home so before choosing your pets be sure to check animals for adoption from the RSPCA and Brisbane City Council. All animals have had health checks, are desexed and vaccinated and make wonderful companions.

Lost and found

If you’ve lost or found a pet try first checking:

Who let the dogs out?

Let your dog run off the leash at one of Brisbane’s many dog off-leash areas. These fenced enclosures give your pooch the opportunity to run, meet other dogs and even try out an obstacle course.

Pet photos

Our directory has a large section devoted to pets including businesses and people who can walk, treat, train, groom and board your pets.

Insurance

Have you ever thought about insuring yourself against possible high veterinary costs? Just like health insurance for humans, you pay a premium per month to cover vet bills, if your pet has an accident or illness. Ask your insurer for details and costs.

Hey all

Any chance anyone out there knows where we can find a dog friendly eating space in Brisbane. Been seaching the net all morning and have come up with Zip.

Cheers

I know the Spoon cafe on Shafston Avenue (East Brisbane) welcomes dogs at their outside tables. Last time we took our dog there they were very welcoming and even brought him a bowl of water!

We've sat outside Rabbotini's in Scarborough with our dog plenty of times, where she sits quietly under the table. The owner even brings her a bowl of water and makes quite a fuss over her too.

Can anyone help me with the actual regulations that apply to dogs and restaurants/cafes and where they can be seated if at all?
Surely the council has some guidelines for pet owners?
Hellllp.
