History - 1900 to 1909

 

1901

  • June 29, 1901 - Executive Order eliminated some land from the Cascade Range Forest Reserve.
  • July 1, 1901 - Proclamation added land to the Cascade Range Forest Reserve. (32 Stat. 1972)
  • August 19, 1901 - Odell Post Office established at Crescent.

1902

  • Population of Bend - 258.
  • May 22, 1902 - Public Law No. 121 eliminated land from the Cascade Range Forest Reserve to establish Crater Lake National Park. (32 Stat 202)

1903

  • Israel Russell of the U.S. Geological Survey studies the geology of Central Oregon including Newberry Volcano.

1904

  • February 5, 1904 - Establishment of the Baker City Forest Reserve. (33 Stat. 2331)
  • Town of Bend platted by A.M. Drake. Bend phone system connected to Prineville which had connection to Portland.

1905

  • February 1, 1905 - Act transferred and assigned all National Forest Reserves from the Department of Interior to the Department of Agriculture, and authorized the National Forests. (33 Stat. 628)
  • Israel Russell's "Geology and Water Resources of Central Oregon" is published. He applies the name Mt. Newberry to the vanished summit of Newberry Volcano.
  • Townsite of Crescent established.

1906

  • March 15, 1906 - Act abolished the Baker City Forest Reserve and established the Blue Mountains Forest Reserve (34 Stat. 3194)
  • July 1906 - Homestead claims being filed on Crane Prairie.
  • September 17, 1906 - Established the Fremont Forest Reserve. (34 Stat. 3231)
  • This forest reserve included the part of the present Deschutes National Forest east of the Deschutes River.

1907

  • First attempt to form Deschutes County fails.
  • Trail constructed across Lava Butte Flow from Bend to Benham Falls to access power site claim.
  • January 25, 1907 - Proclamation added land to the Cascade Range Forest Reserve. (34 Stat. 3270)
  • March 2, 1907 - Proclamation added land to the Cascade Range Forest Reserve and changed the name to Cascade Forest Reserve. (34 Stat 3300)
  • March 2, 1907 - Added the entire Maury Mountain Forest Reserve to the Blue Mountains Forest Reserve. (34 Stat. 3302)
  • March 4, 1907 - Changed the name from National Reserves to National Forests. (34 Stat. 2172)
  • July 18, 1907 - Name of Odell Post Office changed to Crescent Post Office.

1908

  • January 1, 1908 - Eliminated land from the Blue Mountains National Forest. (35 Stat. 1256)
  • June 13, 1908 - Executive Order established the Deschutes National Forest from parts of the Blue Mountains, Cascade, and Fremont National Forests (E.O. 816)
    Included what is now the Ochoco National Forest and lands east of Deschutes River.
  • Asher Ireland became the first Forest Supervisor of the Deschutes National Forest (1908 - 1911).
  • Supervisor's Office was established in Prineville.
  • July 14, 1908 - Executive Order transferred part of the Deschutes National Forest to the Fremont National Forest. (E.O. 912)

1909

  • January 1909 - Irrigation canal proposed for construction from Benham Falls across Lava Butte Flow to irrigate area east of Bend.
  • January 1909 - Contract signed with State for construction of dam at Crane Prairie.
