What is a Clarion Review?

Your experience of chasing reviews has probably been one of the most costly and frustrating aspects of book promotion. Publishers send out literally hundreds of advance copies to many different media outlets, hoping for that elusive review. This problem has magnified over the last decade as media has consolidated, the number of review slots has dwindled, and celebrity status has become more important than content and writing ability. ForeWord Reviews, for example, receives about 700 books every month and can only choose 10% for review. As a result, we originated the Clarion fee-for-review service program

If you are an author or publisher experiencing trouble getting your titles reviewed through traditional outlets, consider Clarion. For $305, we will provide you with a professional review, guaranteeing the same quality and word-length offered in the magazine.

Paying $305 for a professional 400+ word critique is the best marketing value available in this industry. Use the review in your press kit, back cover endorsement, or on your Web site. With your permission, the review will also be archived with the top three title information databases used by booksellers and librarians who make purchasing decisions: Bowker’s Books-In-Print online, Baker & Taylor’s Titlesource 3, and Ingram’s iPage, in addition to our own website

Contracting with a fee for review service is recommended after pursuing all other avenues for review in traditional print trade vehicles, or if you need quotes or cover blurbs for your press kits immediately. Clarion guarantees a fair estimation of your title by a company that has an established reputation for excellence in the book industry.

The entire review process generally takes 4-6 weeks from when your order is processed.

What is a Clarion Preview?

A PREVIEW, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary, 2nd Ed., is “a commentary on or appraisal of a forthcoming book, based on an advance viewing.”

As the self-publishing market explodes, many authors and publishers want to know how their book will compete in the market. Is the cover design and layout appropriate for the genre? Is the back cover copy successful? Are the illustrations explicit?

We can answer these questions.

For $79, authors and publishers can submit works* and receive a quick, qualified evaluation. Each work submitted will be examined by one of our senior editorial staff for interior and exterior layout design, content, and proofing concerns. Each work will also be examined for plot and dialogue coherence, in the case of fiction, and organization and originality in the case of nonfiction. Finally, all works will be appraised as to their competitiveness in the marketplace, including packaging and pricing.

Clarion Preview fills an important need in the contemporary publishing world – that of providing professional and timely feedback. With the already huge and still growing POD market that allows authors to make changes without penalties, Clarion Preview can help to make your work more attractive to booksellers and readers.

Authors and publishers who order a Clarion Preview, and then decide to purchase a Clarion Review, will receive a $50 discount on the additional review.

Clarion Preview customers will receive a written evaluation within two weeks of the receipt of their book.

* Only bound volumes are accepted. We want to see what you consider the finished book, or the book that you would send to reviewers.

What are the Book of the Year Awards (BOTYA)?

›› Book of the Year Awards

ForeWord Reviews’ Book of the Year Awards were established to bring increased attention to librarians and booksellers of the literary and graphic achievements of independent publishers and their authors. ForeWord is the only review trade journal devoted exclusively to books from independent houses.

Our unique awards process brings readers, librarians, and booksellers together to select their top categories as well as choose the winning titles. Their decisions are based on editorial excellence, professional production, originality of the narrative, author credentials relative to the book, and the value the book adds to its genre.

If your books expand a reader’s world, introduce a voice society needs to hear, offer practical knowledge where none existed before, or simply entertain so compellingly that all distractions fall away, they should be submitted for the Book of the Year Award.

›› Judging Criteria

Keeping in mind the standard used by booksellers and librarians for purchases/acquisitions, judges will take note of the following:

  • Editorial excellence
  • Intent of book met by author
  • Originality of subject matter
  • Accuracy
  • Author credentials
  • Professional packaging

Finalists will be determined by a jury of judges consisting of editors and reviewers of ForeWord Reviews, booksellers, librarians, and other industry professionals.

›› Prizes & Awards

First, second, and third place winners will be awarded in each category. A $1,500 cash prize will also be awarded to Best Fiction and Best Nonfiction as determined by the editors of ForeWord Reviews. ForeWord Reviews reserves the right to withhold an award in any category should submissions not meet criteria outlined by editorial and professional production standards mentioned above.

Finalists will be announced in our weekly email newsletter, ForeWord This Week, in March.

Winners in each category and overall fiction and nonfiction prize winners will be announced at ALA and on our website.

What is a Trade Show?

Many of the tasks associated with getting a book to market can be overwhelming to a smaller press who may not have the staff or finances to explore the opportunities in foreign rights sales. Our mission, beyond exposing great books to the trade from the independent press sector through reviews and feature stories in the magazine, is to create ways for publishers to have access to the same services larger houses take advantage of due to their size. The ForeWord Small Press Collective can help you access those advantages with an introduction to the foreign rights market.

Publishers who are interested in exploring the potential of foreign rights sales and distribution overseas will find easy access through the ForeWord Collective stand at four international tradeshows.

Fees per title are $175 (early bird discount available for some shows), or $600 for a shelf. Price incentives for advertising packages. Publishers attending the tradeshows can use our small press collective stand as home base while they explore the shows on their own.
