Sam Gagner is in the backstretch of his fourth NHL season and he’s never seen the playoffs, except on TV, if he can even stomach watching. “Yeah, it definitely bugs me ... that’s why you play hockey,” said the Edmonton Oilers forward, who has eight points in his last eight games for the suddenly red-hot club.
 
 
 
Edmonton’s University of Alberta Pandas and Montreal’s McGill University Martlets are the two biggest powerhouses in Canadian Interuniversity Sports women’s hockey, between them winning the last five national championships.

As a second-time participant at the Tim Hortons Brier, Jim Cotter has heard all the wise cracks and likely read the odd headline, taking off on the old Welcome Back Kotter tune, popularized back in the late- to mid-70s by John Sebastian on the then popular television sitcom.
 
 
 
It’s one thing to get hit by a flying puck at a hockey practice, but falling glass? Just ask Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini, who was minding his own business, standing in the players’ bench area Monday when a loose panel of Plexiglas crashed down on his head. The 3/4-inch-thick piece of glass at the Flyers’ home rink, the Wells Fargo Center, knocked the GM down as players and coaches rushed to his aid.
