1 -- National rookie of the year in track and field star Stephen McPhee. The Bentley product won the long-jump gold medal on his first attempt at the conference championship. He also won bronze in the pentathlon and the 60-metre dash.

6 -- Canada West awards won by the Bears hockey team. In addition to Derek Ryan’s MVP award, Kyle Fecho was named the conference’s outstanding defenceman. Sean Ringrose won the sportsmanship and ability award, while Eric Hunter was named the winner of the Randy Gregg award for athletic ability, academics and citizenship. As a team, the Bears won the fair play trophy for having the league’s fewest penalty minutes (325).

23 -- Points per game for Bears guard Daniel Ferguson. He was named a second-team CIS all-Canadian on Thursday.

Derek Ryan

It’s been a career year for the Spokane, Wash., product. Ryan had 17 goals and 30 assists in 28 conference games for the Bears, all personal bests. Ryan, 24, led the Canada West conference in goals and hat tricks (two), was second in assists and third overall in CIS scoring. On Thursday, Ryan was named the Canada West MVP and a first-team all-conference player. More important to the science major than individual accolades, he and his teammates are chasing the program’s 49th conference crown. They host the Calgary Dinos this weekend at Clare Drake Arena.

2 -- Times the Pandas hockey team has met the McGill Martlets this season and lost. The two teams clashed during a Christmas tournament and the Martlets won 3-0.

2 -- Consecutive fourth-place finishes at nationals for the Pandas volleyball team. The Pandas lost in four sets last weekend to the Trinity Western Spartans in the bronze-medal match.

13 -- Digs for Pandas volleyball left-side player Tiffany Proudfoot in her final CIS game. The digs went with seven points at the net for the Calgary product.

Pandas basketball

It’s a big weekend for the Pandas’ leading scorer. A win against the St. Francis Xavier X-Women will get Alberta into next weekend’s CIS championship at Windsor. A loss spells the end of the season for the Pandas and the end of a remarkable career for Haylett. The Vancouver native has put up 15.8 points per game while shooting 45.8 per cent from the field this season. She’s also made 108 of 127 free throws, giving her an 85-per-cent mark from the charity stripe, the second-highest in the Canada West conference. After winning bronze at the conference finals last weekend, Haylett and the Pandas are in a regional playoff qualifying game at 4 p.m. Friday, looking to make it back to nationals.
