Yuna made the cut before Dissidia saw a transformation into something else!

Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy Creative Producer Tetsuya Nomura and Director Mitsunori Takahashi are featured in this week's Dengeki PlayStation in a two page interview where they offer some commentary on Gilgamesh and other areas of the upcoming PSP title. We'll get to the Gilgamesh details in a separate story, but here's what Nomura had to say about the future of the series and some other pressing issues.

For frequent readers, we already provided a second hand report on the interview from earlier in the day based off a summary. The following report is based directly on having seen the magazine for ourselves.

Dengeki asked Nomura what's next for the Dissidia series. "There is no next," replied Nomura. "We're thinking about ending this pattern of Dissidia here. There also won't be a UT [Universal Tuning, the name for the international re-release of the original Dissidia] version. The overseas version is being released at nearly the same time and has the same tuning, so we're not thinking about a release [of a UT version]. For KHII, I said 'there are no plans at present,' but it looks like this was taken to mean 'it won't be released.' When it won't be released, I'll clearly say that it won't be released. For this title, there will be no UT version."

The Dissidia series may not necessarily be over, though. Said Nomura, "For the Dissidia series, there's the possibility of it appearing in another form. However, we feel that we've done all we can with the battle base. We had the staff work for years on one on one battles, so I'd like to let them do another genre. I feel we've done all we can with this pattern of Dissidia. However, it is exciting to see past characters revived in 3D. So, if given the chance, we'd like to do something as Dissidia. however, I don't think it will be this Dissidia."

Dengeki asked about possible developments for the series on Sony's new NGP system. "Kitase (fellow producer Yoshinori Kitase) was at the announcement press conference," said Nomura. "When NGP was in development, I was able to give my opinion and ideas many times." Pressed about possible plans for the system, Nomura said, "I can't talk about that yet."

On a completely separate note from Dissidia, but somewhat related to NGP, Dengeki asked about the possibility for a download release for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. Replied Nomura, "I'd like to do something about this, but it's difficult for a reason that I can't say. However, I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding -- it's not a problem with Square Enix, Disney or Utada (Utada Hikaru, performer of the game's theme song). It's a completely different issue. I'll continue thinking about a way to make it possible, but it still requires time."

  • Sounds like a Dissidia turn based role playing game is next.

  • @Astraea: That'd be a cool way to go next. Maybe something that's traditionally turn based with a more in depth story and then a VS mode where players can pit their leveled up characters against each other online. Would make for some cool strategic battles perhaps.

  • In my opinion even Dissidia 2 was already too much.
The concept is very interesting but the gameplay (judging on the first game) left many things to be desired.Maybe this was because of the limitations of the platform so hopefully the next version of Dissidia will be on PS3.

  • welll the 1st dissidia story is already in the package so that's good enough.

"Nomura also said there will not be a "next title." That doesn’t mean the team has given up on fighting games, though. Later in the interview, Nomura says he believes he has done everything he can with the combat base. After this game, the Dissidia series could remerge with a new form. Nomura says the staff has been working on 1 on 1 fighting games for several years and would like to work with a new genre."

i don't believe this, i want a PS3 version with HD graphics and online as well as tons of characters not to mention this is only the twelfth battle, there's 11 battles to go you know? :P

im sure there will be another Dissidia, the series is just too good to be left out in the field :P

in the meantime it's good they are taking a break from the series, maybe they can concentrate on other games? i don't know maybe fund Valkryia Profile 3 Hrist? ^^

nice to see there's no problem about Birth by sleep getting a PSN release, would love to play it on NGP

what about Parasite Eve Archives for west PSN? as for Kingdom Hearts III. will probably hear some news AFTER Versus XIII :P

  • Should just be a pastiche of Final Fantasy battle systems with a fresh story. Of course, it would entail all the characters from the past.

  • Here's a great idea!

Create a new franchise that doesn't have the words "Final Fantasy" and "Kingdom Hearts" in it!

  • @Nutters: They did that once, it was called The Last Remnant.

  • @Aurora: How about the team behind Dissidia?

  • But if you look closely, I don't think that Nomura will make the next "Dissidia" something different than a fighting game:
"However, we feel that we've done all we can with the battle base. We had the staff work for years on one on one battles, so I'd like to let them do another genre."
As he said; he doesn't want anymore one by one battles, but maybe he is thinking into something similar to Dinasty Warriors or next Max Anarchy; a game that will work like dissidia's intro; all the characters fighting together in the same space.

  • Oi Anoop? :3 If you can, think you can provide a scan snippet in your next post?

I'm pretty curious about Prishe's third outfit. >:3

  • Shit, why don´t they keep it on the ngp with the same formule?

Sheeeez, man, I would love for a hyper complete edition on the ngp with most characters on it.

  • I enjoyed reading the interview. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  • Personally I absolutely loved the system behind Dissidia. Its easily one of my favorite fighting games. Sure the AI blatantly cheats, but each character is remarkably different in play style, there are plenty of ways to counter or get around an enemy strategy, and its VERY skill based. I think its a shame that theyre ditching it, but if they can pull of the next big thing as well as they pulled off the system in dissidia then Im excited to see it.
