For the second time in a row Justin Wong has gone undefeated to win first place in Marvel vs Capcom 3 at the weekly Wednesday Night Fights in Southern California.
For the uninnitiated, Wednesday Night Fights is a weekly ranbat (a tournament that has the specific intention of raising the participating player's skill level) produced by Level Up, an organization spearheaded by fighting game legend Alex Valle. Despite the relative newness of MVC3, WNF has become the go to location for high level MVC3 play on the west coast and attracts such players as Mike Ross, ClakeyD, Neo, Gootecks, Floe and of course Justin Wong.
While most players are still wrapping their heads around MvC3's insane on-screen action, others believe they've already found game breaking exploits that could jeopardize the future of the title's competitive status.
One of the more vocal opponents to the game has been Martin "Marn" Phan. Marn critized the game on a recent episode of Cross Counter saying "I think [Marvel] Sucks. X-Factor is a big factor. It would have been great game without that but Capcom wants to get a scrubby game that's why we're going to scrub mode."
Most of the criticism of X-Factor (and Marvel in general) seems to focus around the massive damage output of Sentinel, a robot mutant hunter from the X-Men series, and his ability to get large damage out of simple setups.
Some of these claims might be over stated, though, since so far Wong has won both WNF tournaments without using Sentinel at all. Wong has expressed that as long as you have a good team with assists that compliment your other characters well, Sentinel isn't going to keep you from winning. And he's proving it.
At the first event last week Wong never dropped a game using Storm, Wolverine and Akuma and showed a dominating way Akuma's tatsu assist can be used in conjunction with Wolverine's high-low game.
This week, Justin hammered that point home by defeating the competition with a completely new team (She-Hulk, Amaterasu and Tron) and making excellent use of Tron's invulnerable flame assist to setup thick combo strings with She-Hulk.
While some players may lament over the highly buffed Sentinel, Wong continues to show that X-Factor holds no candle to the Justin Factor.
