Extreme highs and lows make for a long winter in Edmonton

Weekend weather may have left Edmontonians feeling like they were back in the deep freeze, but Environment Canada says February’s average temperatures remain on par with previous years. “It seems to be relatively close to what the averages are for both January and February,” meteorologist Gary Dickinson said Sunday.

A University of Alberta astronomer and his team have uncovered “weird” physics inside the youngest-known neutron star in the Milky Way Galaxy. Craig Heinke and his colleagues have discovered the core of the Cassiopeia A neutron star — the remains of a supernova — contains a frictionless superfluid that seems to defy gravity, as well as a superconductor that keeps electricity flowing without ever losing energy.

Budget cuts put Alberta teachers’ jobs on the line

As many as 300 teachers around the province could lose their jobs because of cuts to an innovative government grant program, according to the Alberta Teachers’ Association. In Thursday’s budget, the government slashed funding for the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI) in half, from $80 million to $40 million.

Oil Kings blitz Hurricanes

The Edmonton Oil Kings outshot the Lethbridge Hurricanes 51-21 en route to a 5-2 victory in Western Hockey League action at Rexall Place on Saturday. Oil Kings defenceman Adrian Van de Mosselaer scored two goals and added an assist for Edmonton. Mark Reners, Kristians Pelss and Michael St. Croix also tallied for the Oil Kings.
