'Hawaii Five-0': Why It's One of TV's Best Guilty Pleasures

Cheers to our cop-show guilty pleasure
CBS/Art Streiber

When the "Hawaii Five-0" remake debuted in the fall of 2010, we figured that it would be just another CBS procedural that we'd be more likely to skip than watch in any given week. But instead, we've become completely hooked. Sure, it lacks the hard-hitting edge of "Southland" or even "Detroit 1-8-7," but it's a fun series that's taken an old formula and breathed fresh life into it. Read on to see why we're addicted.

Scott Caan Is Fantastic

We never really gave him a lot of thought before this show, but he's actually great as Danno, a New Jersey transplant who grumbles all the time about the heat, the local customs, and his ex-wife. With someone else, this could come across as unlikeable, but Caan brings humor and charm to the role.

It's Like Travel Porn

Even if you don't like the show, do you see how fantastic Hawaii looks? With lush jungle views, stunning volcanoes, and endless beaches, each episode feels like a vacation.

It Appeals to Our Geeky Side

With Daniel Dae Kim from "Lost," Grace Park from "Battlestar Galactica," and "Moonlight" star Alex O'Loughlin, this show's got some serious nerd cred. And that's not even mentioning "Buffy" vamp James Marsters's guest appearances.

That's What You Call Sex Appeal

Did you know Park has a banging body in a bikini? This show isn't afraid to show her off, while also finding a way to get its male leads (particularly O'Loughlin) shirtless on a regular basis. That's a lot of eye candy on one broadcast network show.

There's Some Pretty Cool Stunts

Most of them are done by Park, who really knows how to work a roundhouse kick to her advantage. There's also been some great hand-to-hand combat involving O'Loughlin.

The Plots Are Insane

It may be the heat, but this special division of cops doesn't usually bust crime rings (though it does, occasionally). Instead, it seems to always land outrageous cases that involve human trafficking, smugglers, tidal waves, and pirates. Yes, pirates. This show goes there.

It's Funny

Yes, it's a cop drama, but this show folds in plenty of levity, which makes it far more lighthearted to watch than your average "CSI: Wherever." O'Loughlin's McGarrett has a wonderfully dry sense of humor, while Danno looks like he's on the brink of combustion half the time, which always makes us laugh.

It's a Procedural and Then Some

It's true that the show follows the basic format of the team landing a case and then working to solve it over the course of an hour, but it's not just one standalone episode after another. There are well-done overarching story lines that keep us invested in the show and intrigued about the background of these characters.

There Are No Awkward Romantic Entanglements

Chin Ho and Kono are cousins. McGarrett has a sometime girlfriend who works as an intelligence officer on the Enterprise. And Danno's still hung up on his ex-wife, who is now remarried. So there's no sexual tension among the four leads, thus avoiding the will-they, won't-they vibe that often ruins shows.
