The B.C. Civil Liberties Association is calling on all political parties to put the brakes on a proposal to increase citizen arrest powers in Canada, saying the plan "opens the door to privatized 911 services."

Penticton 'Freeman' arrested after refusing to cooperate with RCMP

A 57-year-old Penticton man was arrested Monday after refusing to participate with RCMP who were attempting to issue a ticket for lack of vehicle insurance. Lawrence Earl Sukow spent two nights in jail refusing to eat until he finally admitted who he was to police. RCMP say an increasing number of individuals are using so-called "Freeman of the Land" rights when dealing with police, government and the legal system.

Vancouver Island puppy shooting charges dropped due to court delays

Charges have been dropped against a Victoria area man accused of shooting a puppy on Quadra Island in 2008 Cody Wellard, 33, had been accused of willfully shooting a Jack Russell puppy belonging to 12-year-old cancer survivor Max Rose in September 2008.
