England wins Cup opener

CRICKET - England laboured to a thrilling sixwicket victory completed with eight balls to spare over the Netherlands in a Group B match to avert what would have been the first upset of the World Cup on Tuesday. The Netherlands batsmen, especially the South Africa-born Ryan ten Doeschate (119), thrived on England's shoddy bowling and sloppy fielding to power the team to 292-6. At least England could console themselves with the third highest successful run chase at a World Cup after the Dutch posted the best score by an associate member against a testplaying nation.

After success in cricket, YouTube looks to broadcast NHL, NBA games

Google's YouTube service said it is in talks with the NBA and NHL to broadcast live games, building on the popularity of cricket's Indian Premier League broadcasts last year. YouTube aims to show more live sports in the second half of the year, said Gautam Anand, Google's director of content partnerships for Asia Pacific, in an interview in Seoul yesterday. Adding live sports broadcasts may help YouTube expand revenue by keeping viewers on its site longer, which would appeal to advertisers. YouTube's live cricket matches from the Indian Premier League brought in 55 million visits from more than 250 countries, Anand said. "It's fair to say that there will be a lot more appealing sports content you'll see on YouTube," Anand said. "We have ongoing conversations with pretty much everyone." Brian Suh, head of YouTube Partnership at Google's Korean unit, said it is in negotiations with "most pro sports leagues." The NBA and NHL did not returns messages seeking comment.

Canada drops cricket match

-Mahela Jayawardene smashed an 81-ball century, the fastest by a Sri Lankan in the history of the World Cup of cricket, to set up a 210-run victory over Canada on Sunday in Group A. Sri Lanka won 332-7. Canada lost wickets steadily, although hitting by Rizwan Cheema (37), including two big sixes, helped take Canada past three figures to an eventual 122 all out. Sri Lanka was without fast bowler Lasith Malinga, who did not play due to a sore back. Canada plays Zimbabwe next Monday. The top four from each of the seventeam groups advance to the quarter-finals. The World Cup will be reduced to 10 teams from 14 at the next edition in 2015.
