Stairs have to be consistent — you can’t have every step 7-inches in height, then one at the top 5-inches because your contractor cut down a staircase to fit into an existing opening. That’s a dangerous trip hazard. You can’t have a tread that’s only 5-inches deep, because an adult foot can’t securely be placed on it.

Eliminating safety hazards on stairs

Most houses have at least one set of stairs — down to the basement, up to a second floor, or just up the front porch from the driveway. I see a lot of homeowners thinking they can repair or alter their stairs, that it’s not that complicated. Trust me, they may seem pretty straightforward, but stairs are a huge area of concern for people renovating or building their homes.
