"KPS to be under UNMIK control"

PRIŠTINA -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has proposed the Kosovo Police Service (KPS) be answerable to international police in Serb areas, report Priština media.

Ban is said to be offering the possibility of establishing additional courts in majority-Serb areas, although sources close to Western diplomats claim that President Boris Tadić is trying to “complicate” the secretary-general’s proposal.

The reason for this is that Serbia still has no government, while the Kosovo Constitution comes into force on June 15, it is reported.

“That’s why the Serbian president has asked Ban not to initiate the UNMIK reconfiguration process until a new government is formed in Serbia to deal with that issue,” say Priština media.

Certain sources stress that Ban is “very generous” when it comes to Serbian government calls for a functional division of Kosovo.
