iPhone 5: What we want to see

This is our list, but what do YOU want to see?
Submit Article To N4G  Submit Article To Reddit  Submit Article To del.icio.us  Submit Article To Digg
Rumours of an impending Apple release are beginning to circulate once again, as tech-heads begin to whisper about a possible iPhone 5 release this summer.

iPhone 4 has barely had chance to gather even a spec of dust, so the coming of an inevitable sequel will be bitter-sweet for many. But as long as Apple keep making shiny flat products, we'll apparently keep buying them.

Now seems like as good a time as any to put forward a few of the features we want to see in Apple's next market dominating marvel. Some of them are more likely than others, all would increase our mobile gaming experience at least just a little bit.

Feel free to have a natter in the comments section below and discuss what you'd like to see in the iPhone 5 or, if you've already boycotted Apple products, what it'd take to change your mind.

IPHONE 3DS
From what we've seen from the Nintendo 3DS so far we're pretty convinced with this glasses-free 3D wizardry.

We don't know how well 3D would work on a device that requires you to rub your mucky fingers all over the screen but the ability to play something as good looking as Infinity Blade in full 3D on the bus would be a bit special.

We also like the idea of a 3D Angry Birds - still a side-on catapult game but adapted so that bits fly in all directions when you hit your target, taking full advantage of the added depth.

For us, while 3D doesn't improve graphics directly, it does make everything look more solid, rich and real. Adding it to Apple's already incredibly crisp HD Retina Display would make for some very nice visuals. Unlikely, but we can dream.

SHOW OFF
As games on the iPhone are getting more and more advanced, it won't be too long before they're deep enough for us to want to show off. There's not a whole load of app games out there at the moment offering the opportunity to show off skills that have a visual impact. You might be the duke of Drop7 but no-one wants to watch a video of you puzzle pwning.

Once we get to the point where we're playing higher-end FPS multiplayer games over iPhone (that's the dream), then we're going to need the means to construct killstreak show-reels.

The iPhone's already well connected to Youtube and taking still shots of what's on screen is already a feature Apple has provided, video seems like the next logical step.

ANOTHER G
Of course if we're going to be playing more demanding games, competing online and doing it all from a park bench then we're going to need all the Gs we can get. 3G won't cut it

The next step is the still only narrowly available 4G network, which in theory should be much faster. This would mean stable, quick connections outside of Wi-Fi hotspots so that you get a great online experience wherever you go.

There is one problem though: Like we said 4G is still only available in a few places and none of them include the words Britain in them. There are differing forecasts about when our humble island will become a part of the 4G experience but we definitely want to be able to utilise it when it does arrive.

Another potential spanner in the works could be the costs. Unless you've got an iPhone package with unlimited mobile data use, you probably use your 3G connection pretty sparingly. Playing games over a network that charges according to data use could make for some eye-watering bills if networks used pricing plans similar to 3G.

Perhaps we're just suckers for the latest, fastest tech but we'd still like to have the power of 4G as part of our general smart phone experience.

SUPER-SENSES
The iPhone 4 has a good handful of sensors so that it can pick-up on every little tilt, twist and turn you do. Thanks to gizmos like an accelerometer and gyroscope built into the current iPhone we're able to play FPS games using movement of the phone itself as an aiming mechanism. You look stupid in public when you're trying to shoot something high-up, granted, but it's pretty neat.

Combining the above sensors with a built-in compass allows us to actually drag the real world into gaming. Fable 3 Kingmaker is an example of a simple way of doing just that. Add the always nerdgasm inducing possibilities of Augmeneted Reality to a game and you've got something truly sci-fi.

More sensors would mean more potential gaming applications. Why not throw as much as we can get in there? Thermometers, heart-rate monitors, pressure sensors, whatever it's monitoring there are plenty of imaginative developers who will be able to come up with a creative use for it in a game.

The day we get a game that can actually sense when we're near ice-cream is the day we'll suggest that mankind has reached its full potential.

BIG SCREEN OPTIONS
We know, we know; as far as gaming is concerned the iPhone is supposed to be all about little bits of gaming on the move but, like we've already said, the iPhone's ability as a gaming device is growing fast and it may not be long before we're having much bigger, deeper experiences.

When you are sitting around at home then, you could come to find that your phone becomes your platform of choice every now and then and you might want to play your now massive awe-inspiring app games on a bigger screen.

With some sort of HDMI connection option (wireless would be our preference of course) we could do just that, using the phone itself as a controller. More options, more ways to play, is something we'll always press for.

A less extortionate price would be nice
Besides that the iPhone 4 is a top spec machine as it is. 8mp camera, 4g, expandable memory and a hdmi-out would be nice touches but perhaps not enough to justify the cost. I can get by without 3d (definitely wouldn't pay more for it) and I'm not sure I'd use it for gaming much considering the controls.

Why would anyone want to buy an Apple product when they know it's going to be rendered obsolete by a slightly-superior version six months down the line?

To be fair my 2nd gen touch still gets updates and runs almost every app but the sheer speed it went out of date annoyed me at the time. If you buy an iPhone/Touch at launch it'll be top of the line for a year.

Why would you buy anything technological when it's gonna be replaced by something better in the future?

Because otherwise you would have no tv, no phone, no console and no computer
Skill_Machine on 6 Feb '11
Call me an Apple but I can't see iPhone5 released so soon after 4. Maybe more likely an announcement on iPad2? That would interest me, wouldn't be able to afford it but would still interest me :)

Everything is, inevitably, replaced. But I can't really think of any other major computing company which releases updated versions of its hardware so frequently.

They release an iPhone every July like clockwork and make a fortune doing it. Somehow I reckon they'll keep up the trend.
Somewhere down the line there'll be another iPad too, personally I don't see what makes a tablet better than a netbook though.

Tom's on form at the moment with another good piece. The augmented reality combined with a game is something I would consider forking out for, and the potential is mouth watering. Not so sure about 3D as you have said, the screen would probably fragment due to marks on the screen. I get the feeling that Apple will release one though..
monty_79 on 6 Feb '11
Longer product life, I don't mean durability, I mean a longer run time before they release a new 1. It's getting daft.

An option to switch off predictive text. Its the most annoying thing ever!!!
allygray69 on 6 Feb '11
I still have an ipod touch 1st gen that works completely fine, and only being about 3 years old when the new line came out last year, apple completely dropped support for it to focus on 2nd gen+, even though the hardware is none so different. So what is the point in buying an apple product if its outdated in a years time, and made obsolete within 2-3 years?

And sadly this marketing structure works.
monkeyd_93 on 6 Feb '11
Cheaper. No design faults. better OS software fro likes of phone calls, camera. an new iTunes that isn't aweful to use
BenThomasFoster on 6 Feb '11
I guess there will be no major model redesign. All you can expect is entry model will be 32gb with a new 64gb model. You might get a small RAM boost but other than that, a white model

An option to switch off predictive text. Its the most annoying thing ever!!!

This feature has been present for some time now (at least 2 years):

Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> Auto-Correction

Seriously, RTFM much?

This, or at least make it inclusive instead of exclusive like it is at the moment so that you have to press on the correction to change it rather than remove it.
snipeshotsamurai on 6 Feb '11
Got a 1st gen touch and well it's showing it's age. As it has no bluetooth not good enough for Gamecenter it's used primarily as a notepad/music ipod player/podcast/utility device (thanks appzilla :D)

Actually come to thing of it in the 4+ year's I had it it's easily my most used handheld gadget (I refuse to pay Ł2-300 more extra just for phone functionailty over a touch version of which i'ved got a 4g touch also - major upgrade over 1st g).
damoxuk on 6 Feb '11
All I want is more than 32gb. Having to delete stuff from my 3GS all the time is a right pain in the @rse.

Its called the Ipad.

You can turn it off though.

Flash enabled web browser,
Bigger camera,
Better design then the sharp edged iPhone 4,
Bigger screen 3.7" is just not enough,
Oh and why your at it the ability to delete whole albums from the device would be nice and last but not least better bundled headphones.

Uhhhhhh you can.

Just get the freakin white model out.

Flash. :|
Windowlicker79 on 6 Feb '11
I don't understand why they only release one phone every so often. If you ask me, I think they need to release a lower tech version. One that doesn't need Ł35 per month contracts. Just simple texting, phoning and music. It'd be perfect for someone like me who can't afford the high end phones but knows that apple could create a cheaper phone that would have great quality.
PMIKE5 on 6 Feb '11
a affordable price, i have a ipod touch & it works great so i cannot see why they cannot release a iphone for Ł250, because if they did EVERYBODY would go out & buy one, thats a FACT !
alan666 on 7 Feb '11
I'd be happy with flash
wombatinahat on 7 Feb '11
I have no issue with a phone manufacturer making 1 phone (in 2 flavours) once a year and charging a premium for it. Sure beats the overcrowded and wasteful mobile phone market flooded with cheap Nokias, Sony Ericsons, in their multiple iterations.

Every major phone manufacturer does it. Not even King Canute can stop this
robbo1337 on 7 Feb '11
im sorry but a 9month lifespan for a smart phone (a VERY expensive smartphone) & 18 months before being made deliberatly obsolete (see the debacle of the ios4 update on the iphone 1 & 2 which crippled it) add to this the non-existant support from apple (when logging a problem they tell you you will not get a personal reply & go sgo to the nearest apple store, at the time this was 150miles away!) means id never buy an apple product again.
people get suckered in by apples very good touchscreen tech but dig a little deeper & you'll find a lot not to like.
the elz on 7 Feb '11
I'm more interested in what new features iOS 5 will bring, since it'll be compatible with my iPhone 4, and we've already seen some pretty nifty free updates since that launched.
AJDarkstar on 7 Feb '11
Flash would be very welcome but I cant see it happening. Aren't they trying to peddle out their own video player?
phate666 on 7 Feb '11
No idea where the elz is getting a 9 month life span from. It tends to be a year between releases. Get on a 18 month contract and flog your existing model after 12 months. I sold my 32gb 3GS for Ł300 unlocked after 12 months, and bought out my contract with 02 for Ł40. It paid for a brand new 32GB iPhone 4 on a 18 month contract. If you can't afford the phone it ain't meant to be for you.

If you want Flash then jailbreak your iPhone with GreenPois0n and install FRash.

I follow the basic rules of Apple purchases - never buy the early iterations. Glad I did this with my Time Capsule and Apple TV. I waited 2 years for my first iPhone. I do feel for those people who suffered at the hands of the update issue but I couldn't see many benefits to updating anyway as the press releases said most of the functionality would be gimped.
robbo1337 on 7 Feb '11
the next iphone should have:-

1)a printer
2)arms (with hands and fingers)
3)a microwave
4)a teleporter
5)a working alarm clock
6)a fanny magnet

if it hasn't i aint buying it, should have goddamn price of it, piece of shoit
chamony on 7 Feb '11
Put Android on it and make it free with Ł30/35 contracts and then we can talk.
Sirini on 7 Feb '11
I don't care how much they charge for iPhone 5, I will profit like I always have by buying shares of the companies that are supplying AAPL or the companies that are building the phones or their accessaries. Stock symbol Examples : CRUS, TSM, TTMI & NVMI on chips, and ZAGG on accessaries.

The higher the price of iPhone the better for my portfolio.

Got a 1st gen touch and well it's showing it's age. As it has no bluetooth not good enough for Gamecenter it's used primarily as a notepad/music ipod player/podcast/utility device (thanks appzilla :D)

TechJunki on 7 Feb '11
Keep your iPhone in good condition, once the new iPhone gets released then sell the iPhone on eBay or somewhere, now add a little bit more money and purchase new iPhone at almost half price job done.
1. To delete songs without having to plug into iTunes
2. To be able to scroll down as fast as scrolling up, not to much to ask is it?
3. More than 34g
4. Bluetooth on payandgo models
5. slightly bigger screen
6. Flash
7. Better included headphones, at least in-ear for the price you pay for the phone!
8. LOUDER email alerts! and instant email just like the Blackberrys
9. Slightly bigger screen
10. To create photo albums straight from iPhone

I like your thinking. I wonder if any of the uber-geek hackers who jailbroke the iPhone and root Android phones could get Android 3.0 running on an iPhone. I'd get one if they could.
