Sam Thaiday says hopeful NRL team's player wish list a running joke

SAM Thaiday has poured scorn on the proposed new Brisbane NRL club by likening their roll call of high-profile targets to a "Santa's wish list" that would detonate the salary cap.

The Broncos backrower said the Brisbane consortium's hit-list - which includes his name alongside clubmate Justin Hodges and other stars such as All Blacks sensation Sonny Bill Williams, Wallabies flyhalf Quade Cooper and Maroons forward Dave Taylor - had become a running joke within the Broncos club.

Thaiday last night told The Courier-Mail one of his career goals was to captain the Broncos and insisted he had no intention of ever leaving the club.

And he poked fun at the management of the rival new consortium which is aiming for entry to the NRL in 2013.

"The sheet of targets they have talked about is a bit like a Santa's wish list - saying they want this, and this and this. The boys (Broncos) have had quite a few little jokes about it," Thaiday said.

A 2nd NRL team in Brisbane could be very exciting for rugby league. My concern is to provide N.Z. fans with a local "derby" fixture & an exciting "Origin"style series. A 2nd team in N.Z. is needed to provide opportunities for the rugby/league players ,without so many having to either play rugby ,or move off-shore.

Brisbane area needs another club even though just down the road are the very successful Titans on the Coast. The population has increased enough in the past 20 years to support such an idea. As for money, scrap the salary cap as that is not leveling out the NRL competition but rather restricting Rugby League. There are enough billionaires in this world with the cash to buy or set up and sell a club, and one of the worst things to do in this part of the world, from the game's point of view, is to let the Broncos have a monopoly.

Yes put in a second, third and a fourth team in Brisbane. Let's be just like Sydney and have a whole bunch of have-not teams !!! An even better idea is to get out of the NRL and have our own Brisbane comp. Oh wait there is it's called the Qld cup. The problem with the NRL is there are too many teams in small areas. Move a couple of teams out of Sydney to Adelaide, Perth, and make the game a truly National league. As a "National" league the NRL is a joke.

I am all for a second team in Brisbane. I think it has the potential to be one of the best rivalries ever in the game. The only thing i have an issue with is the idea the the second team would play out of Suncorp too. ANZ Stadium should be used as the new teams ground, that way you would create a greater home ground advantage to both teams.

  • Steve - biggest Broncos fan ever of Brisbane Posted at 8:37 AM Today

I've always wondered how a second Brisbane team could possibly be competitive in the fan market beside the goliath that is the Broncos. The Broncos have a bigger fanbase in Australia than any other domestic sporting team across all codes. How can a second Brisbane team ever be more than that - second. My solution: we saw a lot of terribly run and funded clubs have to merge post-super league. Can the reverse happen? If we have a well run, highly funded team, could we split the Broncos into two NRL teams? Sounds a bit ridiculous on the surface, but hear me out. From the perspective of a shareholder, they now have more revenue. In the short term, doubling the teams would not double the money coming in, but long term I believe it would. Even so, in the short term there is plenty of money in Brisbane to supprt two teams, we know this - always have. Wont this destroy the Broncos brand? This is the biggest risk. Turning long time Broncos fans away from the game, because their team doesn't exist anymore. Any splitting of the Broncos must maintain deep ties to the Broncos. Small things like colours and/or mascots. One team could sport yellow and white, the other maroon and navy. TBC.

Part 2 A logo that still bore some part of a broncos or similar horse. It's a shame the Knights are taken, that would've suited one team. Maybe the Caviliers vs Bushrangers...I dunno. So where to divide the Broncos? Probably the easiest question. Geograpically, North and South of the River. Maybe even extend these boundaries to North Brisbane and Sunshine Coast vs South Brisbane and Ipswich. I also think it would be critical to link these split-Broncos teams to existing traditional BRL/Qld cup teams. In doing so, we now increase the number of fans per team. Simply splitting the Broncos, means you have (on average) half the fans for each team. But by linking to old clubs in specific regions, the fan base increases. Remember, many older Brisbane residents wont support the Broncos, because they turned thier back on the BRL comp, and sold out to the NSWRL. Here's a chance to get those guys back. I have many more thoughts on the pros and cons of such an idea. Just putting it out into the public realm for it to either get shot down or gain momentum.

The Broncs have had it too good for too long. A monopoly on fans, sponsors and players have made them a monster that a second Bris based team would find it hard/impossible to compete with. The prospect of a NZ, South Island v North Island local derby is fairly mouth watering but I love to see an Ipswich team in the NRL. Games between Ippy and the Broncs would be like fibros v silvertails all over again!

It would be interesting what would happen if Sam picked up a major injury or had an extended period of poor form. I bet you'd find the Broncos wouldn't be as committed to Sam as he is to them. I wonder how'd he feel about the club then?

If the Broncos of 2011 perform like the team of 2010 there'll be plenty of room for a second team. I suspect Broncos season seats will be available on ebay by the hundreds. Broncos fans are seat warmers at Suncorp Stadium. They buy a ticket to a seat at a game of football not a club membership. For crying out loud you get classified as a member if you buy a seat to 4 games - pfffft. I'd suspect many "members" have never been to the THE club or the THE training field. The Broncos like Suncorp when the Broncos supporters are there, are an empty, soulless place unlike other clubs. You get twice the support from half the crowd at the gold coast. There is a plenty of room for another empty soulless footy club in Brisbane. You can only hope it doesn't kill the second best comp in australia for the second time!

Which one ?... You're too kind saying there would be a game a week here because often there isn't a game in Brisbane for 3 to 4 weeks. There is no guarantee that there wouldn't be doubleheaders or what happens if they are both drawn for a 7:30 slot for a home game? After all its the NRL organizing the draw or its derivative the "independent commission" [in small but capital letters of New South Wales] The NRL have a habit of stuffing things up. Its derivative has no form to say they won't be as bad. They could be even worse. It's the rugby League heartland in name only. Fans come to see winners e.g. Qld SoO. Begs the question what will happen if the Broncos miss the eight again doesn't it! And one of the reasons for the name is that there is a starvation diet and fans have little interest in the local Queensland comp, which is far better than the rubbish served up as a curtain raiser [the NYC] at NRL grounds. The NRL should pay fans to watch the NYC or at least require a discount on the exorbitant food prices at grounds for the duration of the fixture. Hmm there's an idea for the commission improving the food cost!

Andrew of Brisbane what are you on? you are joking. The very reason that the Crushers got the flick under the negotiated peace at the end of the League war was so that the Broncos had an uncontested market for so many years. In other words to have a monopoly on the second largest rugby league market in the world. It would be good to have another team in Brisbane. After all it is the second largest rugby league city in the world.

Andru The Crushers killed themselves with pooor management, marketing over paying has beens that did nothing for the club. Mario Fenech and an ex rugby union has been could tell you that. And the fact they were a poor team. Maybe if they had built a decent club from the outset with good planning and business skill and done as well as the Broncos first up they might still be here. Your argument is a little redundant.

A santa wish list? What, like most Brisbane squads before 2007? Have a look at some of those teams from the 1990s and early 2000s and wonder how they managed to keep below the salary cap. A second team is a must - this is not a one horse town....

    Comment 41 of 57

  • andru of brisbane Posted at 1:57 PM Today

hey Jus I believe it is a fact the when the superleague and ARL formed the NRL the BRONCOS would only sign on if they were the only team in Brisbane. it is also a fact that the crushes had plenty of money and support for a team that wasnt winning they still averaged 21000 supporters a game. so your argument is ill informed.

Its a wish list where a club will target those players on it and hope to get a few. But I guess being smug is part and parcel of being in the Bronco's envioronment. They did their best to death ride the Crushers when they came in and are making sure they do the same to the mere thought of another team. Hope they get in and outdo the Bronco's.

  • dirtyd of Bris Vegas Posted at 2:55 PM Today

Sustainability is not an issue as the proposal is 2013 and beyond. Three to five years into the comp (at minimum - the time allowed for a successful business plan), it will be 2018 of which the population in South East Queensland would be a lot higher than it is now. This means more opportunities for sponsorship increased fan base and more importantly a second team in Brisbane to invest in and develop juniors. Everyone knows that the Broncos is as much a business as it is a football team and will be doing everything to maintain the success of the business including 'doing better than the competition' - hence the comments from Call me on Friday Thaiday.

Of course Brisbane can support a second rugby league team! Brisbane is league mad! But that isn't the question that needs to be answered. The question is - is it a good idea? Just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. We have rugby league heartlands without a team at all crying out for their own team, and we have AFL enemy territory to expand in to if the NRL is to actually beleive in its own "N". A second team in Brissie may well be a good idea but not until these other things are taken care of. To put a team where there is already a team when other places have no team and want one, is absurdity of the highest order.

This is the very reason why Sydney footy crowd figures are down. Just total saturation of the market by having too many teams running from the same location. Also, there simply isn't enough corporate sponsorship dollars to go around to make such a proposal a viable long-term solution. The NRL needs to take the approach adopted by the AFL - start expanding into larger capital cities, such as Perth.

To all those Brisbane people who say "get a second team cause it will be nice to be able to support a real Brisbane team" - please explain what you mean by that. I have never understood why Brisbane people hate the Broncos so much. They have been nothing but good for the development of RL in Brisbane and Qld as a whole and for the development of jnr players. They do so much good in the community and are Brisbane through & through. They are also responsible for a lot of good changes to the way the sport is run in Australia. Could it be you are jealous the Broncos are the most successful and recognisable sporting brand (that's taking into account all sports) in the country and they are the only RL club that actually turns a profit? The medicore often hate the great. Re the proposed playing roster for the new team, you have to firstly discount Quade Cooper and SBW from the salary cap - as union converts they will be exempt for at least their first year. As to whether Brisbane should have a 2nd team? Brisbane cannot financially (ie corporate sponsorship) afford a 2nd team. All a 2nd team would do is dilute the product and result in 2 medicore teams not 1 great team as we have now.
