It had been widely reported that Wozniak, Apple’s co-founder, told Dutch paper De Telegraaf that Google’s Android mobile operating system was better than Apple’s equivalent, iOS, because it boasted more features.
“The operating system of Google seems to win the race,” reads the translation of Wozniak’s comments. “Like Windows dominated the PC world, so is the Android platform for phones that offer the same possibilities as computers.”
But Wozniak has sought to clarify his comments, saying he was misquoted by the paper, and that he would “never” say that Android was better than iOS.
Wozniak acknowledged that Android would be a very popular operating system with consumers, but pointed out that almost every app he used was a better experience on the iPhone.
“I’m not trying to put Android down,” Wozniak told technology blog Engadget. “But I’m not suggesting it’s better than iOS by any stretch of the imagination. But it can get greater market share and still be crappy.”
Google Android is now the second most popular mobile operating system in the world, behind Symbian and well ahead of iOS, according to the latest figures from analyst firm Gartner.
Google Android now enjoys a 25.5 per cent share of the global smartphone market, compared with Apple, which has a 16.7 per cent share, and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry, with a 14.8 per cent share.
