Coal Miner's Daughter: A Tribute To Loretta Lynn

Sony, £8.99

Veteran Kentucky star Lorreta Lynn picked the artists and songs for this tribute album celebrating her 50 years in music. Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle (in a duet with Allison Moorer) fare best sticking to traditional country mode, while the White Stripes stripped down version of Rated X shines with originality. Kid Rock’s attempt to rock-out on Know How, however, just sounds plodding

It's 50 years since Lynn's husband - Doolittle - helped persuade his wife to become a singer and she joins Sheryl Crow and Miranda Lambert for the final track, a neat version of Coal Miner's Daughter.

Gretchen Wilson's version of Don't Come Home A Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind) is feisty and Lee Ann Womack is helped by having Buddy Miller on accordian and Patty Griffin on backing vocals but several of the 12 songs are pretty routine covers that add little particularly interesting.
