Lady Gaga has been crowned queen of the downloads – as new figures show she is top of the all-time download charts.

Her single Poker Face has notched up 779,000 sales on downloads alone to top the charts, while her first UK release Let's Dance is at number three with 700,000. The singer released her first single this year but has had almost instant success, helped by a series of eye-watering outfits.

The list has been compiled by the Official Charts Company to mark five years since the launch of the download chart.

The entire top five has been released within the past 12 months which indicates how important download sales now are to the music industry. Digital sales now account for around 98 per cent of the singles market.

In second position is Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon, who also figure at number four with Use Somebody. In For The Kill by La Roux – the most recent release in the top ten – is at number five and six of the top ten tracks are by female singers, with Leona Lewis claiming two positions.

Lady Gaga, whose debut album The Fame was released this year, said today: ''The commitment and devotion of my fans in the UK, otherwise known as 'my little monsters', has made for a truly memorable and successful year for myself and The Fame. I am honoured to be the songwriter and performer behind the number one and number three all-time most downloaded songs in history in the UK.

''I love my fans eternally, and will continue to live, breathe, bleed, and love music and fashion for them.''

The chart reflects the growth of downloads over the past two years in particular. The Top 100 features 46 entries from 2008 and 21 from 2009 so far. Just two from 2005 and three from 2004 are in the chart.

The Official Download Chart was launched in September 2004 to reflect the most popular tracks within the brand new legitimate download business.

OCC managing director Martin Talbot said: ''This is a fabulous achievement from Lady Gaga, to come from nowhere in January to dominating the all-time downloads list with two in the top three. Her success – and that of Kings Of Leon and Leona Lewis, too – reflect the resurgent success of the singles market in the era of the download and highlights that mass appeal pop music is alive and well in 2009.''
