CAMRA champions Yorkshire's pub heritage with new guide

Greg Mulholland MP to launch guide at Garden Gate, Leeds, LS10 2QB at 12.30pm

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, will launch the first-ever guide to pub interiors of Special Historic Interest for the whole of Yorkshire and Humber at the Garden Gate pub in Leeds on Friday 28th January at 12.30pm.

Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs is CAMRA's pioneering initiative to bring greater appreciation of the public houses in Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire which still have interiors or internal features of real historic significance - now a mere 2 percent of the region's total pub stock (of around 6,000). The publication's aim is to celebrate this surviving heritage, to share an understanding of its importance and, crucially, to sound a call to arms for its better protection.

The new guide will be officially launched by Greg Mulholland MP, Leeds North West (and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Save the Pub Group) and Nick Bridgland of English Heritage will also be a guest speaker at the launch event.

Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs features 129 pubs and provides informative text to highlight their significance, with full-colour photographs in many cases.

Editor David Gamston said, "It will have wide appeal as an enjoyable guidebook, for locals and visitors to Yorkshire alike, and at the same time serve as a serious working reference for the people who own and control Yorkshire's pubs and the official bodies who can influence changes to them."

Mr Gamston continued, "What a special pleasure it is to be holding the launch event at the Garden Gate - described in the new guide as "probably the 'jewel in the crown' of historic pub architecture in Yorkshire". Its upgrading to II* statutory listing in 2010, pressed for by ourselves, has rocketed this fine pub into the top 6 percent of all listed buildings in England."

Yorkshire's Real Heritage Pubs is available direct from CAMRA (www.camra.org.uk/shop / 01727 867201), in all good bookshops and some of the featured pubs, priced at £3.99 for CAMRA members and £4.99 for non-members. (excluding p&p;)
