New President, new WhiteHouse.gov

The White House Web site got a makeover just as President Obama assumed power.

WhiteHouse.gov, the online home of the administration, switched to reflect the changing of the guard at 9:01 am. including a large portrait of the nation's new leader.

"Change has come to America," the Web site declared.

Obama, whose campaign was hailed for its sophisticated use of the Internet, is embracing the Web now that he is in office. The site features the usual basic information about the president and the White House, but it also includes some novelties - at least for the commander in chief.

A blog is among them (although no comments are allowed). In the first entry, Macon Phillips, the director of new media for the White House, said "Just like your new government, WhiteHouse.gov and the rest of the Administration's online programs will put citizens first."

Communication, transparency and participation of the three prongs of the site. He promised that people will be able to get information about everything from the economy to national security; that executive orders and proclamations will be published for everyone to review, and that the administration will publish all non-emergency legislation to the website for five days, and allow the public to review and comment before the President signs it.
