THE DIGITAL MEDIA MANIFESTO

How we got here

(2003/09/30)

The Digital Media Manifesto was first announced on the 5th of July 2003 by Leonardo, the day after he left Telecom Italia. The announcement was made directly to a few hundred individuals via personal emails and some email relevant reflectors (e.g. MPEG), informing recipients at the same time of Leonardo's web site . The news was also reported by technical magazines (e.g. EE Times).

On the 11th of July 2003 an email reflector was set up. Information about this was sent to those who had declared an interest in the initiative. Joining the reflector was made open to anybody. Rules of behaviour were discussed, agreed and posted.

A method to identify and classify the hurdles blocking the success of the Digital Media Revolution was discussed, agreed and posted. On 03/07/30 "A list of candidate business/use cases to be considered to identify and classify the hurdles blocking the success of the Digital Media Revolution". was posted. This triggered the posting of 8 business/use cases studies submitted by reflector members. On the same day "A list of hurdles blocking the success of the Digital Media Revolution" was posted and discussed.

On 03/07/31 the "Proposed Table of Contents of the Digital Media Manifesto" was posted, discussed and agreed. On 03/08/02 the "Proposed work plan to draft the Digital Media Manifesto" was posted, discussed and agreed.

The first Draft of the Digital Media Manifesto was posted on 03/08/11 (two versions), followed by "New proposed draft of Digital Media Manifesto" on 03/08/18 (9 versions), the "Interim Draft of Digital Media Manifesto" (8 versions), the "Complete Draft of Digital Media Manifesto" (8 versions) anf the "Final draft of the Digital Media Manifesto (4 versions).

Most of the documents mentioned have undergone several revision as can be seen from the contribution list. Overall the reflector has seen about 1000 emails exchanges and the web site about 100 submissions by members.
