Haile Gebrselassie yesterday confirmed he has reversed his decision to quit athletics. The veteran Ethiopian tearfully announced his intention to retire after pulling out of the ING New York Marathon with 10 miles remaining due to a knee injury earlier this month.

India's governing party yesterday sacked two top officials tainted by corruption scandals that have embarrassed the country as it aspires to superpower status. The Congress Party said it was removing the party's parliament secretary, Suresh Kalmadi, who was in charge of the Commonwealth Games, and Ashok Chavan, chief minister of Maharashtra, because of a housing scam in Mumbai.
