The US version of the Passat is set to be built at a new factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with the newcomer differing significantly from its European counterpart.
Despite drawing on the looks that Europeans are familiar with, every external panel is new with subtle changes to the window line, rear lights, bootlid and bumper as well as restyled doors and front wings. The US Passat is 99mm longer and 13mm wider than the European version and will sell for about £13,000.
It will be offered with a choice of one diesel and two petrol engines, with the 2.5-litre petrol version expected to account for two-thirds of all sales. The range-topping engine will be a 3.6-litre unit producing 276bhp.
