A state employee was charged with abuse of a vulnerable adult after a psychiatric patient was hit in the face.

Byron Jerome Jones, 43, of West Miriam Avenue in Columbia, was arrested Friday morning by agents with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

According to a SLED news release, Jones was working Oct. 10 at the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital when he struck a patient in the face with a closed fist. The patient was injured and treated at a local hospital.

It was not known late Friday whether Jones was still working for the S.C. Department of Mental Health.
