CAMDEN — Vowing to do “my very best,” former DEA undercover agent Jim Matthews was sworn in just after noon today as Kershaw County’s new sheriff.

More than 650 people — including a galaxy of sheriffs, police chiefs and officials from assorted state and federal law enforcement agencies — were on hand.

Minutes after taking the oath of office from state circuit Judge G. Thomas Cooper, Matthews signed mutual assistance pacts with the sheriffs of five neighboring counties.

Although such pacts are standard in South Carolina, former Kershaw sheriff Steve McCaskill had no such pacts with other departments. McCaskill did not attend today’s ceremony.

In an interview after the swearing in, Matthews said he has a “massive” to-do list, from putting name tags on uniformed deputies to getting bulletproof vests.

First, however, he plans to go before County Council later this afternoon to ask for some $200,000, possibly more, for a four-officer traffic unit, including four new patrol cars.

Matthews said deputies are not going to issue huge numbers of traffic tickets early on, but will get citizens used to the increased traffic enforcement by issuing more warning tickets initially.

Matthews asked residents to come to council offices at 5:30 this afternoon to show support for the department.
