FLORENCE, S.C. — A private school math teacher in Florence is accused of trying to meet an underage girl for sex.

Attorney General Henry McMaster says 44-year-old John King of Lamar is charged with attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three counts of criminal solicitation of a minor.

Officials at the Byrnes Schools in Florence say King has been suspended.

The attorney general's office says King was arrested Dec. 30 in a sting conducted by the Charleston Police Department and the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office. King thought he was talking with an underage girl but was talking with an undercover female officer.

King is being held in the Charleston County jail under a $500,000 bond. It was not clear if he has an attorney. He has no listed home phone number.
