Brecon Jazz Festival (12-14 August 2011)
Brecon Jazz Festival is a music festival held every year in the beatuiful
surroundings of Brecon, in south Powys, Mid Wales. Staged in mid-August, it
plays host to a range of jazz musicians - British and international stars -
and to thousands of visiting tourists who are attracted by the music and
other leisure opportunities on offer around the Brecon Beacons. Since June
2009 it has been produced by the Hay Festival and funded by Arts Council of
Wales.
The Brecon Jazz Festival started in 1984 - when British jazz musicians
Humphrey Lyttleton, Bruce Turner, George Melly And John Chilton's
Feetwarmers appeared - and has attracted acts as renowned as Slim Gaillard,
Gerry Mulligan, Ruby Braff, Benny Carter, Stephan Grappelli, Buddy Tate,
Milt Jackson, Diane Krall.
The festival has also showcased jazz-friendly artists such as Van Morrison,
Joan Armatrading and Amy Winehouse.
In 2010, among the stars of the 50 concerts staged were Scott Hamilton, Andy
Sheppard, Pee Wee Ellis and Kyle Eastwood, son of film star Clint.
Hay Festival director Peter Florence said: "We're just trying to grow Brecon
organically and slowly, in the same way we build all our international Hay
festivals . . .Brecon is reinventing itself as a youthful festival: a
showcase for progressive music and emerging superstars."
