Thrifty tricks for itchy skin

Winter skin — itchy, red, and dry — is the bane of the chilly season. But before you spend yourself into oblivion buying expensive skin care products, try a few of these simple remedies.

1. Lanolin. Lanolin is a natural by-product of sheep’s wool, and it’s been used for years as a prime ingredient in many cosmetic products, including moisturizer. But skip the pricey product and head right to the source. You can buy a jar of pure lanolin for less than $10, and it should last you all winter.

2. Oil in a bath. Next time you take a relaxing bath, add some oil to the water. You can use olive oil, safflower oil (which has less of a smell) or baby oil. The oil helps keep skin hydrated and also combats itchiness. When you get out of the tub, pat dry very gently. If you don’t like soaking, try applying oil when you get out of the shower. Just make sure your skin is still slightly damp.

3. Vitamin E. Pure Vitamin E oil is available from health foods stores, and it’s good for severely chapped lips. Apply a little during the day, and before bed (but if you do this, use old pillow cases because it stains).

4. Petroleum Jelly. More commonly known by the brand name Vaseline, petroleum jelly is a combination of oil, wax and paraffin. Try applying it on feet and hands before you go to bed and slip on some soft cotton gloves and socks.

5. Honey. A centuries-old natural remedy, honey is used in many beauty products. Why? Because, according to the National Honey Board, it’s a humectant — a substance that helps retain moisture. Take a look at the natural beauty recipes on www.honey.com/nhb/recipes.

6. Oatmeal. Oatmeal is an easy and thrifty dry-skin soother. You can buy an oatmeal-based product or make your own. If you choose to do the latter, you’ll need to use a coffee bean grinder or food processor to grind the oatmeal down to a fine powder. Add this to warm bath water and soak your winter skin away.
