Prokofiev.org Staff Reviews:
"Spectacular Live Recording of the Fifth"

Rating:
Reviewer: Sugi Sorensen , Prokofiev.org Staff Writer

Released in May 1996 as part of the BBC Radio Classics series, these live recordings were culled from the expansive BBC Sound Archive. This particular disc contains perhaps the most electrifying live recording ever made of Prokofiev's Symphony No 5. From a performance in Royal Albert Hall, London on 10-Sep-1971, Rozhdestvensky leads the Lenningrad Philharmonic in an amazing, spirited reading of the Fifth. The applause from the Royal Albert Hall audience at the conclusion is deafening, and richly deserved.

The disc also contains the Scythian Suite by Rozhdestvensky, this time leading the BBC Symphony Orchestra from a 25-Jan-1976 recording, as well as recordings of two of Prokofiev's more obscure works, 'Dreams' and 'Two Poems for Women's Voice and Orchestra.'

Overall, the disc is a must-own for fans of the Symphony No 5 or Rozhdestvensky.
