Welcome to Chesterwiki, our interconnected community effort to explore, discuss and compile anything and everything about Chester — especially the little, enjoyable things that only the locals would know. We have reviews of pubs, restaurants, shops and everything else in Chester, and everyone is welcome to add content. This entire site is non-commercial and maintained by the people who use it:- anyone can edit this website! We currently have 744 articles and 632 actively contributing users. We have "twin towns" (wiki-wise) in the wikis for Shetland, Richmond and Mankato. If you're new, check out our Introduction to Chesterwiki. The extensive local authority website is also worth a look. For detailed history try British History Online. We are not the only website about Chester. You might want to visit:

What is unique about this site is that YOU can edit it, add articles, videos, reviews etc. All you need to do is log in (which takes a moment and doesn't ask for any personal information).
Recent Chesterwiki News
  • Some of you may have noticed that we keep getting new pages added by people offering to sell various pharmaceuticals. These get deleted as soon as they are noticed and are one of the hazards of being a "wiki" where anyone can add content. Our personal opinion is that anyone who posts adverts for stuff like that on sites like this is probably selling junk, so as well as deleting them we strongly advise you to disregard them.

Getting Started

More than anything we want YOU to get involved. Whether you are a website related in some way to Chester, someone who lives here or a person with an interest in Cestrian things.

First, check out the Chester Wiki Guide, which explains what a wiki is and how it works, if you don't already know. Wikipedia is the prime example of a successful wiki project. Or read How Wikis Work for some information on the philosophy of wiki.

Feel free to create new pages — just remember to link them so they can be found. If you don't know where to start or don't have any ideas, see what pages we need or head over to the forum to find out what else needs to be done.

If you own a pub, restaurant or another business in Chester please feel free to list yourself - it doesn't cost a penny! However, please don't post gigabyte sized images or add pages of advertising. Try to stick to the facts - we are a "not for profit" wiki and we are not here to host a huge business website for free! If you run a website related to Chester, then add a listing on the Chester online page. If you are from Wikipedia then feel free to copy and link to or copy our content (although a reciprocal link would be nice).

Now this is a pub!. None of that fancy foreign bottled malarkey. Just Sam Smith's frighteningly thick Old Brewery Bitter, and that terrifyingly strong lager whose name you can't remember that blows your head off. A pint of bitter is about £1.28 and pint of lager about £1.58! You cannot beat that! - in fact Southerners have been known to query the prices thinking that they have been undercharged: more >

This used to be the city's Cocoa House, then "City Strippers" a pine furniture shop, then a (sadly missed) Greek restaurant. For some years now it has become Donato and Sandro's pretty impressive Italian. There is nothing pretentious about the menu: "what it says is what you get" (if you can read Italian) and here... that is good enough! Classic and classy. affordable and artistic Italian in spectacular style - il gusto della buona vita! - e cibo a morire per.

Google Streetview

Google Streetview is turning into a very rich source of Chester content. As you move around (use the mouse) you will find a lot of business listings, including Drinking, Eating and Shopping places as well as other information. As a "mash-up" (of sorts) that's fine, but perhaps we need to consider whether it detracts from the value of sites like this one and the longer-term sustainability of local newspapers like the Chester Chronicle (going, in one form or another, (and not under the present management) since a long time back, but with some classic headlines).

Another good map "mash-up" can be found at Gaiagi (try entering your address!).

The Chester Map

This should contain links to all of the pages on Chesterwiki with "geographic" content. You can edit the version at Map and it will be checked before being uploaded here. Please feel free to explore - there is a lot more to this than you might think!

A - Attractions or historical interest
B - Businesses
C - Castles
D - Bars
R - Restaurants
F - Facilities
N - Neighbourhoods
H - Historical Interest
M - Museums
