Premier League - Snow wrecks schedule

Sat, 18 Dec 12:44:00 2010

Only two Premier League matches survived the big freeze in Britain, with games at Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Wigan and Birmingham among those called off.

Arsenal's clash with Stoke at the Emirates fell after a late pitch inspection, with Birmingham's game with Newcastle postponed shortly before kick-off.

Wigan's game with Aston Villa at the DW Stadium was the first to go, followed by the late afternoon kick-off between Liverpool and boss Roy Hodgson's former club Fulham at Anfield.

Chelsea's much-anticipated clash with Manchester United on Sunday has also been postponed, as have Sunday's lunchtime clashes which would have seen West Bromwich Albion's Midlands derby against Wolves and Blackpool's hosting of Tottenham.

All the other professional leagues in Britain were ruined by the weather, with only one League One game surviving, no League Two matches going ahead and two SPL games surviving the snow and ice. The League One match between Exeter and Sheffield Wednesday only went ahead thanks to the efforts of fans who volunteered to help clear the snow.

The Championship came off best, with just four matches postponed - though Ipswich v Leicester was delayed several times during the game for stewards to shovel snow off the pitch.

  1. From an English football fan across the pond who actually knows your football:

Great of those fans to help clear the snow in that L1 tie. Here? They'd never volunteer to begin with, and even if they did, the grounds crew would tell them to go toss it. They'd be afraid one of the volunteers would have a heart attack and lay charges against the team for letting him work. You think there's too much litigation in the USA? :p

  10. I saw 3 families making snowmen clear a football pitch in a couple of hours, so how come a team like Chelsea can't do it in 24hrs? They just know they are not in form, and it was a dangerous time to play United. Shame on you.

From Steve, on Sun 19 Dec 2:25PM

  13. I think a winter break should be implemented. This would benifit players and fans when the snow keeps on coming every year.

  14. Just hope City's game against Everton is on (keep away snow) it would be great seeing City at the top of the Premier at christmas if we beat the Toffees, and a bit of trivia, it would be the first time in 81 years that the Blues have topped the table on christmas day. C'mon City don't f*** it all up.
