1974 flood

It’s over 30 years since Brisbane was inundated by the aftermath of Cyclone Wanda. The cyclone itself crossed the coast near Double Island Point, however, as it weakened, a monsoonal trough caused torrential rain across South East Queensland.

Watch a movie of Brisbane during the 1974 floods and compare it to recent floods that hit our city.

Over a five day period between January 24th and 29th 1974, around 900mm of rain fell and the Brisbane River reached a height of 6.7 metres. That's more than four metres above normal levels. These floods were the worst to hit Brisbane since February 1893 when the river peaked at 9.3 metres.

  • 1931 flood: In February 1931, Brisbane experienced another severe flood with the Breakfast Creek area suffering the worst of the downpour. Over 1000 houses were damaged.
  • 1841 flood: As far back as 1841, there are records of flooding in the Brisbane and Bremer rivers. When John Oxley travelled up the Brisbane River in 1823, he noted rotting vegetation in the trees which suggested that there had been a recent inundation.

I'd heard about the 1974 floods in Brisbane but this is the first footage - never knew it was so extensive and so high!

Images of the flood bring back the day that changed my world as a 13yo. I lost my darling Grandfather as a result of the flood. His car was caught in flood waters near their home at Kedron. With my Grandmother sitting in the car he pushed the car out of the flood water but the exertion was too much and he collapsed from a heart attack. I remember in the midst of this grief our family still went and helped others in their mud damaged homes. I also remember going with friends to see the Hornibrook Highway across to Redcliffe as the waves engulfed it. It was an awsesome sight. Due to the floods our new school year was delayed a few days.

I remember it only to well we lived and still live in Stones Corner and our houses back onto the creek I remeber as a child my parents in ground pool rising out of the ground and nealy floating away if not for us securing it to the side of the house. I often think of it all and the sadness it left behind for some.
