Stuart Black’s set struggled to take flight, though he has some interesting ideas and the occasional delightful – or otherwise – turn of phrase. His description of a haemorrhoid in his routine about Embarrassing Bodies will sear itself into your memory. The matter-of-fact delivery eschews the hard sell, but also means he can struggle to demand attention, especially in the sections that are less assured, such as his discussion of his ill-fated attempts to spice up his sex life… a routine which ended in a Chewbacca impression that seems rather passé these days. |

Stuart is brilliant - seen him perform many times and will do so many more! Jolene, January 2009 |
If brevity is indeed the soul of wit, then Stuart's watch is running fast. There are times I don't know what the hell he's talking about, and neither does anyone else. Including, I fear, the man himself. But anyone whose webpage boasts 'Two Chickens Breaking Up A Rabbit Fight' deserves consideration.rnrnPlus, his approach is confident enough to shame Lenny Bruce, laid-back enough to shame Jack Dee, and beer-swigging enough to shame Paul Calf. Dubious comparisons aside, Stuart has the uncanny knack of starting low-key, slowly working up to the major issue, and finally exploding without losing a Fawlty-esque sense of bewilderment. Sure, Stu's not quite in control of his material yet - the words are often tougher than their delivery - but as he gains your approval you feel one day Stuart will be all the aforementioned comedy heroes and more. Michael Monkhouse, November 2007 |
Very promising indeed. Played elegant, tightly written sets at my Banbury and Oxford gigs. Silky, January 2007 |
I saw Stuart a few months back, he was the one stunning highlight of a rather dull evening. He had some really good material. Andy Gilfrin, January 2007 |
I think he's great. Spot-on review that will look lovely when he's had that experience and grown to match his potential. Andrew O\'Neill, January 2007 |
Stuart is utterly fantastic and easily one of my favourite acts around right now. The shit he comes up with... unbelievable. To make a lazy comparison I'd say Dylan Moran meets Gene Wilder meets Stuart Black. On acid. Caroline Clifford, January 2007 |
